SERIOUSLY.

I went and dug through that giant list of resources and stuff, found the website, and set about drooling over models. Then came the trying to read fluffy bits and.. realized it will take me way longer than I have available to me to read everything.

Argh.

I would be throwing money at it if I had folks to play with, but that's what this post is for! So, for one, can I get like a short player-breakdown of the playstyles of the factions? Are there (like in Warhammer,) "bad" units that are mostly just for "casual/fun" players? (I need to know so I can buy them.)

I'm also wondering from the US - side players how successful you've been in getting people to play with you and if it's gaining any traction in your area. Like, it seems like something I'd really, really love, but I'd say my FLGS miniature players are all pretty firmly into 40k/FB with a few Warmahorde players, so. I'm very cautious (poor person problems,) and would love some reassuring from ex-or-current players of those games that it's.. different (in a good way) and also something they enjoy playing.

I need that appeal if I'm going to grab a starter or something and try to convert a few of my favorite guys.

My mode is that I'm meaner than the average.

There are no 'bad' units. There are units that might be a bit more situationally good, but no units are outright bad. Some don't get used much because they're just outshone by others (for example, the Khawarij for Haqqislam), but using them won't lose you the game.

There's a popular saying with Infinity - it's not your list, it's you. That doesn't mean you can't make a dud list, which is perfectly doable. But what it means is if you have an idea of what sort of list you want to build, and a clear idea of how to use it, it's not the list that's going to win the game for you. It's how you use what you bring that will win you the game. This is why netlisting isn't a thing with this game. A list that wins for one person might not win for another, since people build lists around their playstyle, and decisions made during the game are generally more important that what you fill your list with.

Oh wow! That's really cool!

I've never had many "netlisting" problems with opponents or anything, but I do know that a lot of times I played the Warhammer games it seemed like the list is a big part of winning and losing. So, based on that alone, my excitement has only grown. In your area, are there a lot of players? And what do you think of the rules (as they are now)? Do you expect a lot of changes in the next set of rules?

You're in Seattle? I offer my sympathies.

Over on the Infinity forum there is a list of players, but easier still, a list of WarCors here http://www.infinitythegame.com/warcors/warcors_list.php These guys you can contact about playing, Demos, etc. Like Pressgangers. The name you are looking for is Toadchild, at the bottom of the list. He used to be here in Md. A good person.

Mn, no sympathy needed! You know, I've lived in a lot of states thanks to prior military service, and when I needed to pack up and move somewhere new, I chose here without having ever visited.

I intend not to leave unless it's to Europe.

Thank you so much for that player resource! I will definitely give Toadchild a /wave. If you're still in contact with him, feel free to let him know I will likely pester him soon.

We have a list of players here on Dakka too, it's stickied at the top of the sub forum. There are also 4 links to other lists of varying size and complexity within that post. I had a quick look and there is one other person from Dakka in your area looking to connect.

Washington, Seattle, Savnock + Gaming Club

And as you can see he attends a club in some form to play Infinity so it shouldn't be too hard to get a game or whatever.

Thank you Casey's! I was actually just looking at your thread yesterday, too - I'm excited to see more of your Ork. And way jealous of your sculpting ability with green stuff!

(I also fear my noob around here is showing. lols.)

I gather you like rain then, Smireland. Good luck in finding players. The game is undergoing a transition at the moment to 3rd edition. That is something to consider too.

Direct links are always best, Casey's Law, which is why I directly linked to the WarCors site. I had forgotten about the list here though. Thanks for the reminder

Savnock also games with DeflaterMouse. He, DeflaterMouse, is very talented at scratch-building terrain. So, if you can game with those guys, you'll play on some top-notch tables.

Thank you so much! I'm always proper chuffed to hear someone likes my sporadic creative splurges, maybe one day I'll actually finish a project! And you just nudged that Nork up a spot on my to do list.

Give me a shout when you get some pictures of your work up so I can have a gander! And don't worry about being a bit of a noob or whatever the kids are calling it these days, we come here to learn, share and communicate. Asking questions is how we learn.

Edit: Fair play, Red!

You caught me - I love the rain and am one of those crazies who carries their wallet and phone in a ziplock bag in their bag so they can walk in the rain and not need an umbrella.

I heard (or read) about the rules change coming up. Do you think it will all change a lot?

As far as terrain, that does sound like a nice bonus! Generally, I could care less where I play. Getting along with and enjoying the interactions with whom I am playing with is always the most important thing to me. I don't mind getting crushed if I'm having fun.

And to Casey's: You're so welcome! Compliments where deserved. I will certainly post some things and be really embarrassed how bad they are, but I will be sure to let you know when I do. My only project right now is Wood Elves, so. We'll see how I do with the repitition of painting a million little bows and cute, giant animals used as mounts. (Those stags!)

The great thing about Infinity is if you have a group of friends that like games, they can jump into it inexpensively compared to 40K. If two people go in for Operation Icestorm, you have a good start right there. You don't need a lot of figures and can start small, which is great for a small group of friends. As more and more play, then others will start to join in especially if you have a couple decently painted miniatures. The miniatures tend to bring people to look and the rules gets them to stay but that is just my opinion.

If you like the rain you should moved to Scotland, haha!

The prevailing opinion currently for new players learning the rules is that you should try and either pick up Icestorm or get a copy of the rules from it as it is a stripped back version of what is to come in N3. That will make it a lot easier to slide into the full rules when N3 drops in early-mid December. The change from the current rules into N3 looks to be substantial enough that you don't want to be confusing yourself with such little time until release. That said, you can be sure that Infinity will remain to be Infinity and they will keep a tight grip on all of the reasons we love it.

Can't wait to see you work, I have a big soft spot for Wood Elves actually and have almost bought some more times than I could count. And no more putting your work down until we see it! Stags... that reminds me I meant to swap back to an older avatar.

I bet I'd love Scotland! Hah. Honestly, the only thing stopping me is the means. I can't tell you how many times over the last five years I've thought 'I should just move to <enter place in Europe I think I'd enjoy living.>

Its happened a lot.

I'll try to control my self-depreciation about my work until I prove it, but your answer to my question was exactly what I was hoping for.

I am a quick learner, but it seems smart to wait and see what the new edition changes among the present, current units and new ones. Splitting a box of Operation Icestorm sounds like a cool idea! I just need to find someone interested.

Also, I'm a fan of your avatar! I dunno why, I just think Stags and such are pretty as hell. (And your last one was quite all right, too! )

@Dark Severance: Cool! That's pretty much why I originally started Warmahordes, because like the starter box + a unit each was more than enough for all three of us to have a lot of fun and it was way cheaper than 40k. Hopefully I can improve my painting ability before then, though. heh. I think if I can get a hold of some models and someone to learn to play with (or who will teach me,) there's a good chance I could sell it to some of our local players. That route has its own obstacles for me personally, but I'm hoping all goes well.

Painting Infinity models is unlike painting any other manufacturers models. So small, so detailed. Basic grunts have detail to match characters in other games, and the realistic proportions make it a real challenge. However, the details are super sharp, so they take to washes really well.

Purchase wise you're probably safe picking up anything from the top 3-4 rows of each faction on the Infinity Miniatures page:

http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/facciones/

There's a list of discontinued minis in this forum, a handful of which reflect rule/profile changes or removals for the new edition, most are just due to models being resculpted and repackaged.

Good luck, I'm excited to get my first game in, and I think a lot of people are in the same boat, which is really great for the game.

It might be worth taking this to Shae. I'd quite like some stuff from inside Icestorm myself so he might be able to split one or two of them up with enough interest.

Thank goodness for Fern Gully and Bambi then, haha! I love stags and lions and to a lesser degree wolves, anything aggressively male with an overtone of feminine finesse.

The terrible part is I'm not even a big fan of animated movies, and still I know all about what you're talking about. I like some wolves - the maned variety particularly - but I am a sucker for the cute things and my major weakness is foxes. If I had a bunch of little fox bits, I'd say a lot of my special models for Wood Elves would have them. If I could find giant fox mounts or have them made, I would be extra excited with all things miniature based.

Excellent, I threw a message up in his thread earlier too. I'm just looking for some of the Nomads, a CSU if there is one left and some of the extra stuff from the box. You'll need all of the extras from a box but if there is some more interest or he might be able to split two boxes or he might have stuff left over from another split. We'll soon find out what he can do.

A couple of my friends who are getting engaged absolutely love foxes. Never got it myself, the look like runty dogs to me. Plus the females make the most horrific noises in the middle of the night, bloody infuriating. Watch Fox and the Hound though, you'd love that if you into foxes.

Well, depending on how much it is and what I can muster, I may be able to help make splitting two boxes happen. I would definitely need the base stuff - but I definitely think we can figure something out. I have no idea what I'll needing yet, but, again, I'm all good with making sure you get what you want out of it. ^.^

Also, my love for foxes is mostly because they're genuinely, hurt-my-human-brain smart and cunning little things. I also think they make cute sounds and pretty much enjoy every aspect of their temperament. Even when they're crazy angry it's kind of silly and cute. In addition, the colorations on them always are appealing to me.

I mean, look at this:

My inner d'aaaaw alarm is going off.

Honestly if he can only split one or something we'll make sure you get what you need first. I might end up buying a full box after Christmas anyway in a 'destined to fail' attempt at getting some friends to play. Much more important that you get a good start at Infinity.

And you just won the thread with a GIF of a fox. Well played! My heart melts and I retract my anti fox rant.

The CSU is a sore spot for me. I love the model, but nothing in Icestorm is useful for me. I don't play either faction and have no intention to, so I can't justify the box for just the CSU. So I miss out :(

Beyond the Beltway

Clearly you fine people have never been awakened in the early morning hours by a fox and a vixen copulating outside of your bedroom window.

"What does the fox say?" Trust me, with the Almighty as my witness, you do NOT want to ever hear it.

That said, they do keep the rodent population down, which is a good thing around here. Plus, unlike raccoons, they don't tip over garbage cans and make a mess everywhere.

There is a quick starter rulebook for N3 floating around somewhere, if you can get a copy. the N3 ruleset is due out 8 december, but the free pdf with just the rules will be available 1 January, or so I heard. I intend to buy the books, because I want the whole thing, rules, background, artwork...

Icestorm is a good start if you want to play or already play either of the two factions in it-- or use it for demo games. It can be played as a stand-alone product too.

Otherwise, I will tell what I was told when I started. Look through the CB website at all the minis in all the factions (except mercs) and pick the faction which has the minis you like best. For a Fox fan there is the winter vixen,

and here's a gif of a winter vixen cosplayer...

It really is hard to go wrong. Just don't try to get everything at once.

WHAT. ARE THOSE.

DO WANT.

Sorry, had to.

ARGH. Why are they so cute? I don't think I'd ever be happy with how I painted them. Every game would start with, "Excuse my poorly painted cute animal people, I'll be on paint attempt #47 soon."

As for the fox-sex, yes, I think I'll skip just like I did that ridiculous song! Never even listened once.. and kinda proud of it. lol. You're very sweet to "make sure I get what I need," but I'm equally interested in making sure it's good for everyone involved. I don't know if I'll ever be able to buy a full box (in the near future,) but I'll be happy enough painting them for awhile.

Those are Uberfallkommando, Nomad Bakunin units. Basically you take a Chimera (the attractive fox lady) and a bunch of Pupniks (the other guys). Not sure about their play style though, I haven't used them.

Smireland, lol@ 'what does the fox say' They're pretty good fun, v. cheap for points (the pupniks are only 1pt each!) that will either get into close combat and cause havoc or get gunned down on the way there.
Although I guess they will become more expensive in points for N3 now that melee combat is becoming more effective.
