Looks like it might be just the right size for a really big game of LOTR. The only question, is whether or not it's worth seven hundred bucks. It is very pretty though, sculpt wise.

Most likely, although it's nothing a few days in a bath of dettol won't solve.

It doesn't look all that great to me - that treasure pile looks like they have pressed some sack cloth into clay and called it a pile of coins :s

For 700 gold coins I would be expecting it to be a genetically engineered living dragon

I think the Arkenstone is in that pile as well?

Holy crap you're right, it's really a pile of gold O_O

I thought it was just a sandy base and paid it no mind. It's really shoddy - too regular piles of coins, everything painted gold, even jewels.

In all seriousness I think it looks great, but the gold does resemble a sack.

For $700, I hope they used real gold leaf for the piles of gold Smaug is sitting on.

Er, that's a collectible statue, not a wargame miniature. Goes on your shelf, not your gaming table. Too heavy for that. Bit fragile too.

I think it looks good. Not 700 bucks good though.

And I agree with other posters about the treasure. It looks like glossy mud.

Why the HELL is that $700?

Did BTP paint it or something, because I don't see any OSL (and the teeth and eyes are painted....must be a new guy).

Well, they're almost certainly doing one, and it will almost certainly be awesome, and to be honest, ever since reading the Hobbit Smaug has been number 1 on my list of "things I want in lovely plasticy form"!

Hence, if it's anything less that about £90 I'll buy it.

From what was said back when the first movie came out, they're almost certainly not.

Supposedly New Line stipulated that if they made one, it had to be to scale... and GW decided that it would just be too big to be practical.

I think it's awesome... the price is high, but size-wise it represent the Smaug of the movies quite well. I think that's the only thing the last Hobbit movie nailed, but man did it ever! He was so intimidating

to scale would make it as big as i am. Even with new line and their complete lack of knowledge on anything miniatures would know that to scale is the most absurd thing possible

That's the point, though. They didn't want Smaug's impact lessened by having him made in an inappropriate scale. If he doesn't fit into the scale chosen for the game, then he clearly shouldn't be a part of that game.

To return to the actual topic, it's a nice enough statue, but like most movie collectibles I've seen, seems more than a little over-priced for the quality. I probably would have liked it more if I wasn't a modeller...
