Happy Holidays, Friends!

I'm running my first painting contest, and it's for one of my favorite games, Rivet Wars!

Contest Details

Contest Background:

Through the week leading up to Christmas, parties of German and British soldiers began to exchange seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches; on occasion, the tension was reduced to the point that individuals would walk across to talk to their opposite numbers bearing gifts. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, many soldiers from both sides independently ventured into "no man's land", where they mingled, exchanging food and souvenirs. As well as joint burial ceremonies, several meetings ended in carol-singing. Troops from both sides were also friendly enough to play games of football with one another, in one of the truce's most enduring images.

The submission period for entering models will last until 31 December 2014. Models submitted must meet the following guidelines:

- In the spirit of the Christmas Truce, all entries should include at least one Allied and one Blight model, and should have them interacting in a manner that befits the contest background. They can be singing carols, playing football, or just shaking hands. Be creative!

- A person may submit as many entries as they wish.

Pictures of the finished model/miniature must be submitted No Later Than 31 December 2014 Pacific Time.

All entries must be uploaded to CMON, no external links. Please follow the following directions:

1. Set up an account on coolminiornot.com
2. Then go to http://www.coolminiornot.com/userpics
3. Category - Steampunk
4. Manufacturer - Rivet Wars
5. Name of Mini - XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
6. Comments - You can talk a little bit about your piece.
7. Send an email to wittdooley@hotmail.com with a link to your piece on coolminiornot.com

Contest Winner will receive an original Christmas Truce Themed watercolor from none other than Rivet Wars Creator, Ted Terranova, and a Rivet Wars Jetpacker Promotional Model.

First Two Contest Runner Up will receive a Promotional Treasure Hunter Model.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Love me some Rivet Wars. I got all excited seeing this because I'm in the middle of painting my core set now (and finally making decent progress).

Sadly between work and the holidays I don't have time to work on a special diorama or anything for them.

But it's a cool theme, and a great game - so I really look forward to seeing the results.

I'm hoping we get a decent turn out. I have a few more themed ones in mind if this one goes well.

I always wanted to get into Rivet Wars. Money wasn't there during the KS, and buying it all at retail seems so daunting (and exponentially worse of a deal)... still, maybe this contest will push me into buying at least the core game.

Hmmm. I know this isn't the place to discuss it... but how much am I "missing" for good, if I go in now, and buy expansions, as they release?

How much play-value is added by the duplicate/extra infantry/vehicles/tanks, etc?

Nevermind. Coolstuff sold out, and doesn't stock expansions. Boo. :-p

Well crapsies. I tried

I'll answer the question anyways.

There are heroes listed as "KS exclusive," none of which, IMO, are really that great in game. They'll almost certainly be available at conventions, however. Rosie and The Jetpacker are the only one's I'd want to get again.

With that being said, I have extras of most of them, and many of those KS promos will be up as prizes in future contests.

The dice are listed as KS exclusive, but they're packaged for retail, with barcodes and everything, so It would surprise me greatly if they don't show up at retail.

And in game, how much versatility does the duplicate set of... well... essentially everything offer?

The KS doubled the infantry, cavalry, tanks, etc... of the core set.

Thing is... I've long wanted the game, its just a question of buying it piece-meal at Miniatures Market, or paying some price-gouger on Ebay.

I think the extra KS core set stuff helps, but IMHO, were I buying Rivet outside of the KS, I'd actually get Spearhead as my first expansion. It gives more more options as opposed to more volume. I honestly haven't tapped into any of the bonus core infantry we have outside of an 18 tile game that we played for some funsies.

With that being said, I think an eBay Auction like THIS is absolutely worth about $300, and is actually a way to get into the game. Between the heroes you get, the two flying heroes, and all the extras, I think $300 is where I'd cap out on it.

The terrain box is completely unnecessary, but is completely awesome

And according to Miniatures Market, the flying expansion, heavy metal (mega-tanks?) expansion, and Second Wave (which had the optionally sold mecha units), have all yet to release.

So... in theory, a $300 Ebay investment actually is more expensive than buying two core-sets, and one of each existing expansion, and all I would be missing is four exclusives (as most apparently ARE included in the War-Room expansion).

You're absolutely right, here. I've been trying to get all my gak together for the past month, but work has exploded (we had a team member leave), my wife went back to work from maternity leave, and the sport I coach started up!

I PROMISE the next one will come with more notice

Incidentally, sorry for derailing your wonderful thread, but thank you for the advice and enthusiasm. You've sold me on the game in some form or another.

So...Lets break it down, at retail prices

Core Game - $100
Spearhead - $70
War Room - $30
Blitzkreig Extra - $100 (this is an estimate)
Funke & Red Baron - $50 (I think they're going to retail at $25 a piece)
Terrain Box - $30

So...you save maybe $100ish and get the KS exclusive models, so it's probably a wash if you get the stuff from a place like miniature market, especially if you're okay with not having the few KS heroes from the Blitzkreig box.

So I'll rephrase I think $300 for a Blitz package on eBay is fair, but not necessary unless you really care about the KS stuff

No worries. There are only a few games that I'm really enthusiastic about, and Rivet Wars is one of them. It's a combination of the game being really charming and fun to play (IMO) and the fact that the creator, Ted Terranova, is one of the nicest, most genuine dudes that I've ever met.

I hope to meet him someday and owe him an immense apology.

At the time the KS ran I was doing some work for people related to Dust Tactics. It was a tense time for that game, and its fate, and I very unfairly gave Ted and CMoN a lot of grief claiming Rivet Wars was a little TOO similar to Dust for my liking.

That was in poor form, and I still regret letting personal investment and emotion make me act like an ass.
