So my friend lent me his GK codex since i enjoy reading the fluff. And I've yet to play him so I haven't had the chance to see his army in action. Grey knights look like the most cost effective army out there!
Can such a small army of GK actually be good? I have never once played a GK player, so I have no experience. Can you field a 1000 point GK army while not spending big dollars? And what are they good at, aside from wrecking deamons?

Most GK players call their army bad and uncompetitive, but you can have a good and cheap army, especially if you spam Dreadknights (like everyone does). Automatically Appended Next Post: They utterly destroy 'Nids and gun line armies.

yeah a GK army is AMAZINGLY low cost to get into.
you could go out, buy a GK Libby, a couple of boxes of GK termies. and a dreadknight or two and have a 1000 point force reasonably cheap. especially if you use the Nemisis strike force, and make most of your termies up as fully loaded pally squads. that'd allow you to get 1000 points proably with less then 20 models. not sure it'd be all that compeitive, but it'd be areasonably decent force to build out from

Actually there is no army that is cheap to start.
You need the rulebook and the codex.
GK armies usually have a low model count, but the models itself are not cheap.

They're cheap compared to other armies.

3 box of terminators , 3 ndks ,1 box of terminators , 1 counts as tigurius and the army is done. Not a s cheap as the 15 terminators+draigo list, but still cheaper then other armies that have to buy multiple msu units. They also have no problem with getting special weapons.
as Pozy said, cheap compering to other armies, but nothing GW makes is cheap anymore.

Only replying cos of the "have to buy multiple multiple small units units". It made me cry a little on the inside.
Pedantry aside, I think it's possible to make a very low model count and decent army using GK, which would probably cost less than a same-points cost army of another faction. However it's not exactly "cheap", as you'd need to be buying terminators and dreadknights which are pricey models.
Would still be cheaper, though. But might be rather... bland and monotonous to play?

I wouldnt say "that cheap" But due to the high points cost models are, they can be a much cheaper army than say a horde type army, like tyranids, orks, guard etc etc.

Yea. I looked into it. Its pretty widely available to get terminators on Ebay. And I already have tigarius and Librarian Terminator. Might be worth doing just so I can have a second army, but only if I can field all of it for a cheap amount.

You can get away with a brand-new 100pt competitive GK army for ~$200:
Librarian
3 Paladins w/ Apothrecary
5 Terminators
2 Dreadknights
If you make the Libby out of one of the spare Paladin bodies that's 4 kits.
