Many years ago when I started painting I couldn't figure out why I could not get anything to look like the pictures on the box. I bought the old citadel miniatures painting guide with Mike McVey (I think that's his name) and it changed everything for me. My style has changed drastically since then, but the book helped me a great deal.

Ha, thanks, Limey!

That really re-enforces me to get the book.

It wouldn't really be that big of a deal if say, I had someone here who had experience in such matters, but it's just me and the interwebs!
So I've decided to purchase the book, the more help I can get! all the better.

ATmm Youtube is my enemy, haha, I'm being forced to run a tether for 3G surfing, and youtube won't even load. We have one service provider here, and they're still at an ETA of 7 weeks out for installment of the very expensive 15MBPS internet.

So for the time! I have no access to video tutorials/help of any kind :(

YouTube is your friend of you want some examples of NMM or wet blending. It's not really that great at teaching basics, which I think many painters who complain about how it's hard to get clean results haven't studied. At my FLGS, I see people painting miniatures from pot to mini, with junked up brushes, and who kind of just l on paint, washes, a little drybrush and call it a day. If you just want minis to play, that's cool, but if modelling and hobby are important to you, learning the basics are like learning the scales with a musical instrument.

There are some sites that give you a lot of videos for a small subscription fee, and some of those are a great value. There are some real gems. But, you have to go through a zillion hours of video, and introductory-wise, they are just not as concise and cohesive as Duncan Rhodes' video that comes with the book. And, some of the videos are terrible, or obvious -- like there might be a "how to paint ultramarines", but there is not much more than blue paint, wash, and some drybrush, ending with, "see how easy that was?".

There are a couple of awesome sites. Also, I really prefer a written to a video format, generally, for 2 reasons: I like to see all the steps side by side, and not have to scroll the time index. Also, a GOOD book has excellent, blow up pics that have much more resolution than a video.

Talys, you absolutely nailed it. I too prefer written instruction to a video. Even at work, I tell everyone, text me. Gives me something to go back on ( very prone to double questioning a lot) But if it's a step-by-step book, with beginner instructional video. I'm sold on it.

The hobby is important to me, just like playing my guitar is important to me, I hate incompletion, cutting corners, and haste. Since I've decided to get involved in WH40K, it was an immediate decision that this was going to be done the right way, and that this was going to take time. I'm way to much of a 40k junkie to speed paint my army haha. So this, Rhodes, video, does it still come with the book?

And what would you think would be easier for entry level? Do you think doing a Soul Drinker purlpe and bone may be easier? (pre-mutation period under the emperors protection of course) I don't like the idea of having an 8 legged Sarpedon.

As far as I know the dvd is still part of the book.

The book also nicely stands up as a flip book for while your painting

Its really not that bad a product for what it is; an introductionary book. For me I'd probably need to look to the Forge World masterclass books to learn some new tricks. (Which I might get now I mention it)

'Ain't nothing crazy about me but my brain. Right brain? Riight! No not you right brain! Right left brain? Right!... Okay then lets do this!!

Hawk Lords are a pretty good purple scheme to sink your teeth into.

@angelofvengeance

Hm, that is a pretty nice color. I'll have to see what kind of fluff I can find on that chapter.
