I'm going to have a crack at my OI stuff this weekend. I've seen some beautiful work on these forums, and googled Alt Schemes etc but I'd like some views from you lot.

I know first and foremost that they're my little war dollies so I can do what ever the feck I like with them, but If I were to paint, say, the Pan O red (like Duncan's Blood Angels on the GW Youtube Channel) would I be slapping some fluff in the face, and get laughed at when I take them to a games night?!

The other side of that is I really do like the standard schemes, and would only change them slightly. Pan O more of a Space Wolf palette and the Nomads pretty much the same, but maybe orange or dark green instead of red.

Cheers.

There's no rule that would prohibit you from painting them in alternative colours, logically units deployed in different regions will also have different camouflage patterns.

I'd welcome the alternative palette very much (green and red seem to be preferred substitutes for PanO blue). For a while it seemed everyone was painting studio approved design.

Yeah that would make sense.

I'll play around on that tomorrow, cheers!

If it means anything, when I've played at events over the past few years my miniatures have been in the minority that they are painted in the same schemes as the studio examples.

'Best painted army' (as chosen by Bostria) at the Paradiso launch was in non-standard scheme.

Now wish I had been a bit more adventurous, but when I got into Infinity I suffered from 'new 40k marine player, must paint as Ultramarines' syndrome

Ah good, cheers guys!

Ha yes I'm the same. I'm quite comfortable with blues and greys but then it all gets a bit much and I worry I'll mess up my dudes!

I want to start messing about with glazes and such, but don't think this is the right project. Keep it basic, keep it tight.

I'll start a Painting blog for a little bit of encouragement.

I use Army Painter's Wolf Grey on my PanO to give them a uniform blue-ish look without going full on blue (which I don't really like).

It's good because it then works with any other colours I want to bring into the scheme (which vary by sectorial):

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

Those look awesome Riquende - nice to see some brighter looking miniatures.

Did you use a spray on those for the base can I ask?

I really disliked the standard Merovingian scheme (sky blue and red, really?) on everything but the Loup-Garou (being modeled very obviously on the real-world Gendarmerie).

Therefore, while I've only just started, I've been painting my FRRM on the current French uniform, which I have been fortunate enough to see bloody everywhere the last few days.

It's not the best photo (some bloody fool painted the shade of our main light orange, so the white balance is a bit of a nightmare), but it'll give you an idea:

I may yet re-orient and reduce the side of the flag, but it's a minor quibble.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

He looks great. Got any other miniatures to show?

@ Riq: yours are splendid as well.

Only one other Briscard for now, only recently moved to Paris, so I've been doing tourist stuff. In another week I'll probably have more to show (and I need to borrow my girlfriend's camera to take any decent photos given the lighting, and she's rather protective of her sweet, sweet macro lens).

I've really liked the community paintjobs I've seen thus far; for the most part, I don't like the studio paintjobs; technically excellent, but just a little too anime for my liking, but then that's one the reasons I like Ariadna and Haqq the most aesthetically, being the most grounded.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Looks very cool MajorStoffer. In fact, probably prefer that colour scheme to the official one, the real-life style camo looks like it works really well with it.

Make sure you post some more pics of everything when you are done!

Quick update... I intended to build my stuff today. Crikey it's fiddly! I really don't think I have the hand eye coordination required so I might have to commission Golem to do it for me...

Monders.. friend of mine that has the hand-eye co-ordination of a demented baboon wearing boxing gloves, but still managed to put some really fiddly bits together. Just needed some serious prompting and the promise of physical punishment if unsuccessful - maybe you need a mate to stand in with a stick of bamboo cane and offer the same if you fail with any of it

(Although I accidentally managed to cut off some hands thinking they were flash, so not really in a position to criticise anyone!)

Ha haa, cheers Pacific yeah you're right, I'll hire a fellow nerd to threaten me with GBH if I mess the minis up.

Bought a new desk lamp and an LED day light for it. £10 for the LED. DOOOOF.

I'll keep an eye out for hands, thanks for the heads up!

All six basic troopers now assembled.

That was the least amount of fun I've ever had gaming (and I have 2,600pts of Lizardmen!)

Had to pin the Pan O girls right leg, and the two nomad chaps gun arms don't line up with the opposite hand properly. Really frustrating and enough to put me off doing the rest!

At least a shoddy paint job will cover up any poor assembly!

Rant over. I'm more angry at my self than at the sculptors.

Hope to get a few basic games I this weekend!

Hmmm I didn't have any issues with any of the sculpts requiring me to pin them. The only pieces I had issues were the little fits, but that is more just me holding them in place with tweezers long enough for the glue to set. I did have one Nomad female (she's pointing) that her arm did fall off, but I think that was because I didn't clean it as good as I should of. Once I reglued it back I haven't had any issues with her. At first I thought the Nomad guys were off because they didn't line up or I thought I mixed them up, since I dumped them all into a soapy vat to scrub before assembly. After putting a couple other miniatures together I went back to them and found the right angle to twist the gun so it lined up properly after that.

Although I have worked with their other miniatures before, some of the older kits were a lot more fiddly... the newer stuff was very clear and crisp to me compared to them. So having some experience helped a bit I think.

I'm pretty sure it's my impatience slash lack of proper modelling skills as opposed to bad sculpts.

I think I've got the Nomad girls gun arm on wrong too. It doesn't look unnatural, but it doesn't match the box art either!

I'll have a crack at the rest, then when my confidence is up I may go back and repose.

Thank fook they're metal!

You are not alone! I hate the 2 arms holding a gun models so much. Well some of them anyways. The Fusiliers, Father Knight, and Grenzer were fine, and the Akalis was a dream fit. But the Nisse was a bit off, and the male Alguacils were just terrible, like 5mm+ off when dry fit snugly on each arms square peg

Cheers Michael, so glad to know it's just not me! Here's hoping the rest go together ok!

I realise they can't make them fit like Lego, but it would be awesome if they could/would.

Edited for photos:

Pan O - Pinned leg on Miss, one gun arm not quite right (guy on the right. Not the best angle).

Nomad - Wonky arm on gun arm Miss, one gun arm not quite right (guy in the middle).

Sorry to keep waffling on, but I've just had an idea.

I'll break off the crappy arms and secure the mini to my desk with a chunk of blu tac, leaving both hands free for positioning and holding the arms in place whilst the glue dries.

Any update? You've reached a similar level of hobby to what I usually achieve. But painting (or even undercoating) would be off the chain!

One tip for your fusilier's leg issue would be look at the seam in the front of the trousers, it should line up exactly either side of the holster strap at the join.

@Stuart - Well, I've based them! I bought undercoat and fresh paints yesterday, hoping to make a start this weekend!

@Rick - DOHHH! Can't believe I missed that. I'll break and reset her leg before starting on the above. Thanks!
