Quick question that came out yesterday on a league game. My skull crushers got rear charged by a unit of minotaurs which had great weapons, and as usual the juggernauts did a lot more than the riders and scored 6 wounds on the unit, erasing what was left of it before they could even strike. However when a friend came by and asked what happened to the minotaurs I told him the juggys did all the hard work, and he told us that since it was a rear charge mounts weren't allowed to fight back.

I looked for it on the BRB but can't find any restriction on the cavalry entry nor on the rear charges section. Surfing the net I read that there was a restriction on chariots but not on cavalry, I couldn't find any of that either on the BRB, so I'm assuming my friend and whichever post I found on the net was from a previous edition but want to be sure if it arises again on my next game.

Your friend was wrong. Mounts can attack in any direction.

The only exception, and what your friend might have been thinking of, is Chariots like you mentioned. Chariot mounts cannot fight to the side or rear, but everyone else is perfectly allowed to fight wherever.

Why wouldn't they be able to? Do horses in Warhammer have no ability to kick backwards? Stablehands in that universe must have a very safe/easy job...

The skull cannon is different to normal chariots, in that it doesnt have anything pulling it and can fight in any direction luckly.

Some monsters have bonuses when being attacked on the rear flank (chaos chimera).

I think the rule takes into account the fact that a steed pulling a chariot is yoked in pretty tight and can't move much to the side or rear. There is also the chariot blocking the steed's rear and the wooden poles to either side.

Thats exactly it. The chariot restricts the beasts so they can't fight any direction except to the front. Cavalry mounts are not encumbered the same way.
