I just preordered my Fleet and I am wondering if how many others have or are going to get Star Wars Armada?
Would like to get an idea if this will take off like X-wing has.
I'm starting a Imperial Fleet.
I just bought the starter set and a extra Victory Class STD.
So who else is getting into Star Wars Armada?
I would also be interested in finding what other ships people are getting as well

I'm playing Imperials and I really like the Gladius, so my first armies will center around a number of those stubby star destroyers. Not sure what they're good at though, but that open front seems to indicate a kind of carrier, which means I can send out some nice swarms.
We still need to see how the finalized game plays, since the early showings at GenCon were pretty basic. I have a feeling they'll change significantly.
They barely showed any of the upgrades and characters, which are probably going to be more important than in X-Wing.

Yeah I think you are right about the Gladiator Role as a Carrier.
Would be interesting to see what the point cost difference between a Gladiator class and a Victory or what the difference in play style with them will be.

I'm defnitely interested in starting up. Every time I looked at X-Wing I thought "Why couldn't this be capital ships instead?" Wish granted.

Pass. Exaggerated scale inconsistencies means this isn't the game I'm looking for, despite being after a Star Wars capital ship game for about 20 years.

The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. The only ship I thought was out of scale was the CR90 ( FFG always has this ship out of scale) , otherwise the ships are all pretty much spot on.
And realistically making it to proper scale would make it too small for it to be a useable ship that includes the fighters as well.
Heres what the ships scales are suppose to be like.
And here is pics of the models.
Now comparing to pictures or videos can be hard but it looks quite close in terms of scale.
Certainly not game breaking or canon breaking.

I want to wait and find out more about how the ships perform. I'm also concerned about the cost, as I'm sure the starter set is supposed to be 1/3 of a standard game size, although that might be Internet conjecture but it follows the X-Wing core set at launch anyway.

I'm diving in with both feet. I'm in for a starter and one of each expansion blister. Hopefully living in the home of FFG it'll at least take off here. We're seeing good buzz for it locally.

I'm eagerly awaiting it. I have the Hasbro capital ship battle game, and was completely dissatisfied with it. Having played X-wing, I have faith I will enjoy this a great deal - and hopefully will be able to modify & use the ships from the other game with this.

Yep I pre-ordered from a US discounter back when it was announced. 3 core sets iirc, I might sell 1 or individual ships off if it looks too much which I can do at a profit given the jacked up prices down here. I'm told running 3 VSDs at once is unlikely in a normal game so chances are I'll be getting rid of 1 unless it looks like larger scale battles are workable and fun.

Yeah I saw the point count for th VSD and relised I could only really field 2 of them.
Maybe I'll be able to upgrade one to a VSD II to make up for the smaller list of ships.
It is a shame you live in Perth would be awesome to play some games with some Aussie players.

That's my understanding, too; a "normal" game is two victories with names and upgrades, or three stripped pretty much bare (assuming - not unreasonably - there is an Imperial admiral subsantially cheaper than Willhuff Tarkin coming!)

Basically. It seems like 3 V-1's could be viable. With Tarkin you can only have 5 tie fighters, but with a cheaper replacement you could get between 6-8 tie squadrons depending on how cheap admirals get. Compare that with 2 V-2's with 20 points of upgrades each, Tarkin, and 6 tie squadrons plus Howlrunner (Howlie fits in this list right? I can't remember her point cost).
Squadrons look to be very important, but having too many seems to be a liability given that capital ships can dump out AoE anti-squadron damage. A third Victory would put a ton of hurt onto enemy tie's if you do mirror matches for example.

It all depends how dangerous squadrons will be.
I wouldn't want to loose my capital ships to bombers due to lack of fighter support.
I have a sneaky suspicion that squadrons will be able to do some serious damage to capital ships (Especially Rebel fighters) if they are not being harassed by friendly squadrons
I think Ties will be on the defensive role more like bees defending the bee hive which would be more in line with SW canon
I reckon Gladiators would be a better option for capital ship superiority being that they will be presumably cheaper then the Victory Class I & II and wouldn't have to sacrifice fighter support to do so.
Only downside is the Gladiator may have to be taken in a Supportive roll lacking the firepower of a Victory Class.

I'm waiting to see what comes of Dropfleet Command. I only want one capital ship game knocking around, and I am a huge fan of Andy Chambers' excellent space battle rules. I want to read some comparison reviews of both games before I drop my quarter into either slot.

Weird. To me, from your own pictures there, it looks way out. But if you're fine with it, go ahead and buy it. I'm just answering the question positted by the OP, not telling anyone else how they should feel. And given geography, I'm not affecting your potential player pool, so no need to feel threatened by the reasons.

Except the OP specifically asked who else would be getting into the game. Not whether you would, nor for your reasons why you would not.
Which is not to say all discussions have to be positive, but in this case, no one asked, and most don't care.
As for me getting into the game...
I suspect I'll go with 2 Gladiators and only one big star destroyer. In a full game probably 3 Gladiators and extra fighters. Focus on pinning the enemy fighters and harassing the smaller rebel ships with my own fighters. Then use the VSD with as much of a high damage loadout I can give it to hit anything that's a target.

There are several gameplay videos on youtube from last years Gencon that give a good indication of how the game plays.
It seem like a more comlex and slower game than X-wing, which is to be expected.

I pre-ordered a bunch of stuff from a webstore, then saw Amazon had the core set for $54 bucks (they have since taken that down) and ordered another from them. My wife won't be happy when it all shows up as I am trying to cut down on hobby/gaming items, but I'm a fan of fleet battles and star wars, so I gave in to my urges.

Well, I do have concerns. I have pre-ordered at my local store, but unless they show more of the actual gameplay and upgrades, I'll probably cancel that pre-order before release.
That said, they just previewed the two Star Destroyer expansions and some of the upgrades that go with them.
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=5325
Sadly, no word about fighter interactions yet. The Gladiator seems like it's going to be kitted as a faster, close in fighter for Imperials. With no indication of using in a carrier capacity.
And one thing I really like with Armada compared to X-Wing is that if you bump a ship (or just your own), your opponent gets to choose where it ends up in contact with it. So, much less of those bumping for positioning shenanigans.
However, with the defense tokens being expended on use, I'm also concerned about swarms of smaller ships as an echo of the TIE swarms.

Yeah I had a read of it earlier
Here is a older post from FFG which goes into some detail of the importance of Squadrons and the fact they can do some serious damage to Capital ships if left unmolested by friendly fighters
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=5240
A like the fact if a fighter squadron that is in close proximity to a enemy squadron has to engage it and is not allowed to attack the capital ship.
This makes for a better reason to have squadrons defending you Capital Ships.

Looking at all the previews and the point values they show, here's a potential 300 point army that's my style.
1 VSD-1 - 75 points
2 Gladiators - 56 points
10 TIE Fighter Squadrons - 80 points
Various upgrades - 33 points
I also like how more interesting objectives are built into the game from the start with the mission cards, and how you always have to play with one. No one I know plays scenarios in X-Wing.
Actually, having done the research, I'm feeling a bit better about this game and might preorder an extra gladiator and fighter box.

I thought it was awesome you get Admiral Screed for the Gladiator. His ability to change a miss into a hit at the cost of loosing 1 die is awesome, as it always means he'll hit first attack.
