Been in and out of the 40k gaming experience a lot in the past few years. Started way back in the day with Rogue Trader, but these days I'm not even sure what edition we are in. I know I bought the original Dark Vengeance boxed set, and I seemed to barely have grasped those rules when a new edition came out. Maybe I'm just getting too old for this. How are you folks keeping up with all the rapid fire changes?
I used to own every codex. I own two or three of the current ones, and feel horrible about what I paid for them.
Still love the universe. Still love the models. Still the love hanging with friends.
You folks feelin' likewise? Got some insight?
Thanks.

Yeah, its impossible to keep up now since GW has been drowning us in rapid codex releases, followed by supplements, followed by dataslates, followed by formations, followed by campaigns and campaign books that come segmented into different parts with each part costing about 50 bucks, followed by the release of new units/box sets with free rules several months after army update (see tyranids)
I'm thinking a rough estimate of all the publications released since 6th edition would cost you about $1000 to own all the rules.
We're in 7th ed since May 2014, which was about 1.9 years after the release of 6th. Force Org Chart has been thrown out of the water (aka its optional now), Unbound got rejected by the community mostly, so now GW is trying the formations trick to entice us to buy additional box sets just so our units can get that fancy extra special rule for said formation.
Check out my sig for some quick reference as to what's changed from 6th to 7th.

Thanks for the info.
I'll definitely check the 7th Ed review.

First, welcome to Dakka.
I’m another old hand from the RT days, there are a number of us still floating around. Editions change, but minis endure. I gave up on owning all the rulebooks at the end of 3rd. I don’t mind paying slightly crazy amounts for minis, but shelling out for rules that go out of date in a few years bugs me, so I just buy what I need these days. I trust my opponent to have/know his side of the table. If I wanted to play in a more competitive environment, I might need to keep more on top of things, but for the relaxed group at my FLGS I’m fine. I rely on Dakka here to keep up on what I need to be concerned about. Not that it changes my TAC list building much, but it helps to know what’s out there in a general sense.

I'm with ya. Also started in RT days, but I stopped playing in 5th (I moved and we had no game store). I just got back in about 5 months ago and it's an adjustment. Especially the $50 codexes and supplements. Ouch. It's worth the investment though. I'm having a blast despite disliking many of the rules changes.

It's not that bad actually. The game isn't as tight as 3rd edition, but there are few unit or character-specific rules. Also, earlier there was WD rules to keep up with, which are now much easier to get by buying the different dataslates. I prefer the current format.
The rules aren't that expensive, it's one book every few years, and the differences between 6th and 7th were minimal, it might as well have been called 6.5th edition.

True, you can get the rules fairly cheap. Especially if you play an army that is featured in one of the starter sets. (The limited edition ones they are coming out with now are super deals in terms of models as they are not the snap fit jobs but the actual model sets).
Where you run into money is if you want to collect all of the different codices and extras. If you use allies, this could add up.
The codices are starting to be set up as a single "main" codex wit optional additional ones for special formations and such. I think this is a money grab cause they could eaily just combine them in the first place.
For rules, I would get...
1. The mini rulebook comes with a set. Hope your eyes are better than mine. I have trouble reading it (age catching up with me) I also own the big version but dont usually carry it about)
2. Your codex or codices if your using the extra formations/allies
3. Escalation if your planning to use the bigguns like titans or stompas or whatnot.
4. Stronghold Assault if you plan to use fortifications and want interesting ideas and rules for different buildings.
