I use sprues as a source of plastic for conversions or detail replacements.
For example, my nob lost his finger (fell off somewhere and i didn't manage to find it) when i modelled him holding a rokkit pack handle. I just cut off a sprue piece, shaped it as a nob's finger and glued it back. You won't be able to tell the difference. Especially from afar.

Sprue is also good for fences, supports, and whole necron armies.

The sprue crons thing is mostly a joke. There are pictures out on the web of someone doing it though, kinda funny. And it’s all, 100% GW kits. Just not the part of the kits most people use.
It’s not going to replace plasticard for true scratch builders, but a few struts here and there can help.

Eldar being my main army, I really like the small boxes that the finecast models come in, perfect for bits when you use the plastic resealable blisters inside. And I use the boxes for the vehicles and Wraithknight for bigger bits and sprue trees I haven't used.

I have a closet full of un opened Tau, Dark Eldar, Eldar, a few other half hearted projects. But looking at my signature, you will know that I certainly don't keep old boxes.
I do however, keep the sprues, bits bits bits.

I still have every box for every 40k miniature I have ever owned (of course I am pretty new and its not that many boxes...yet). I still have the leftover bits attached to the sprues in each box, I'll remedy that when I get some spare time and put together a dedicated bitz box (maybe one of those segmented plastic craft boxes...). Then I'll probably chuck most of the boxes even though the pictures are actually pretty nice.

I've kept two boxes to store bitz in, the rest I've recycled.
