I'm playing against a guy who I know uses mawlocs in a tournament.

I'm not all too familiar with this creature. I know it enters play from reserve and something about needs to make room to enter.

Does he scatter? Is it full scatter?

What STR hit does it take if he hits from underneath?

Can he target an invisible unit?

It scatters as normal, they're S6 AP2 hits, they don't target but hits any unit under the large blast marker and there is no restriction on where to place that marker (within reason). So an Invisible unit can still be hit.

The downside though is that everything in the large blast marker has to be killed for the Mawloc to emerge.

If you dont manage it on the 1st attempt you get a 2nd attempt - if you still dont manage it, the Mawloc mishaps

Does the mawloc need to be centered on where the large blast was, or does it just need to touch it

The large blast is centered where the Mawloc ends up scattering when arriving via Deep Strike.

I've been playing "center of the base" as center point for the large blast.

That seems sketchy to me. The base itself is like 4" by 6" or something thereabouts. So your opponent would basically be saying that he could ignore a 6" scatter.

Don't have the rule in front of me to verify.

The Mawloc base is pretty large and the Mawloc itself doesn't move from the spot it has scattered. The Blast marker is put 'directly over' the Mawloc, but that doesn't explicitly mean centered, but the Mawloc isn't put in an area where the Blast covers. It just has to be able to be placed where it scattered to or it hits again or mishaps. Says nothing about a way to change where the final Deep Strike location is after Scatter.

Sounds to me like you got cheated, whether advertently or inadvertently. Sounds like he's switching up his scatter results. SharkoutaWata is right. Wherever the Mawloc scatteres, that's exactly where he will appear (if he can clear out th models that might be there).
