All things being equal, if I just wanted access to the relics from a given supplement, can I take a CAD from that supplement if I specifically don't want any of that book's detachments?

As far as a I know, that should be fine. The relics (and indeed Warlord traits) are bound to the Supplement Faction/Army rather than to the specific detachment, so there's nothing to stop you running CoF as a CAD or even an Allied Detachment and still having access to their relics.

Unfortunately no, Relics of the Great Wolf (before The Warlord Traits) specifies detachments and formations presented in this book. Or to be more precise it doesn't give permission for detachments and formations not presented in the book to take them.

Bah... I was afraid of that Silver...

I was trying to find a way to get a Wolf-Lord to strike with AP2, but at Initiative. Krackenbone was the only way to do so... but I don't own the models i'd need to run the Company of the Great Wolf.

Damn... Back to deciding if Grey Knight Force-Weapons would mean more in my meta than Thunderwolf Cav, and more plentiful bodies/objective holders. *sigh*

Edit: Actually the wording sounds ok. It says that anyone FROM these detachments must take relics from this book, instead of the main book, but never says you MUST be from these detachments to take them.

However, there is no permission for a model to take Relics of the Great Wolf, except for models that are from on of the detachments/formations.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

The Wolf Lord has permission to take from Relics of the Fang and does not mention Relics of the Great Wolf. It doesn't meet the requirement of being in a Great Wolf detachment that gives it permission to use Great Wolf relics so it doesn't have permission.

And typing 'wolf' this many times cured the passing fancy I had of starting a Space Wolf army...

Basically, if you want supplement relics, you need to use a supplement deatchment/Formation.

Honestly... this is also why I forget rules, or lose nuances of the rules more often than I would like. :-p All joking aside, all the uses of "Wolf" "Fang" "Claw" all blur together so completely an utterly, that I am thrilled I can make lists in my head with only one small-mistake here or there. :-p

I wonder about the reverse though. Would supplement detachments/formations be allowed to take relics and Warlord traits from the main faction book?

In this case, no, the Supplement is very clear on that. Sometimes, yes, like Exterminatus's Blood Angel Archangel's Detachment and Formations "can also make use of the Relics and Warlord Traights below". It's a case by case basis.

Honestly, it's not that hard to use the Company of the Great Wolf detachment, all you need is two Elites along with your Wolf Lord, especially considering all the good things that are in the Elite slot for SWs. One of the "joys" of SWs is that there's no real difference between Blood Claws, Grey Hunters, or Wolf Guard, they're essentially interchangeable. If you have eleven power armored SWs, you have enough to make your detachment. Two groups of five for the two required Wolf Guard, and another for the Wolf Lord.
