I'm yet another one of those damned fools having a hard time wrapping my head around detachments. Now, I know an Allied Detachment cannot be the same Faction as your primary Detachment. But you can designate any Detachment as your primary Detachment, correct? Say I have an Inquisitorial Detachment and a Combined Arms Detachment from Codex: Dark Angels, and further say the Inquisitorial Detachment is my primary Detachment. Can I also have an Allied Detachment from Codex: Dark Angels?

Death Guard - "The Rotmongers"
Chaos Space Marines - "The Sin-Eaters"
Dark Angels - "Nemeses Errant"

Yes. Your primary detachment is wherever your Warlord is.

Baring restrictions of a particular detachment, yes, any detachment can be your primary provided it contains your warlord.

So long as your Allied Detachment is a) not your primary and b) is not the same faction as your primary, you can have one or more Dark Angels Allied Detachments in addition to one or more CAD of Dark Angels.

The only Detachment that I can think of off hand that can not be your Primary Detachment is an Allied Detachment. It mentions this in the BRB entry for it. I think everything else you said are fine. Have fun!

You don't really choose your primary detachment. You choose your warlord and his/her detachment becomes your primary detachment so any detachment that is devoid of character models can't be your primary detachment unless the entire army is devoid of character models.
