A few pics from the first playtest of Battlegroup 84, a Cold War modification of the WW2 system.

Soviet advance clashes with West German Panzer grenadiers and US Airborne. Basics worked fine, the leopard 2 turned out to be a rock with its stabilisation and advanced optics traits, the NATO artillery ranged in early on a good position and was able to keep shelling while Soviet rocket barrages did little.

Lots to do, but the basics seem sound and everyone enjoyed it. Thanks to Skip and Brian for bringing the models and figures, and for Brian to hosting the first game at the new Hobbyden venue.

Cold War battlegroup? Intriguing.

"Do you think it is an easy task to inflate a dog?" - Cervantes

"Do you have a map of the cat?" - Richard Feynman

How to paint Skeletons the way I do if that's something you'd fancy trying.

I'm a bit confused... well, not confused but does the Bachmann refer to the manufacturer of the refinery - their model railway stuff is amazing quality.

Really glad to see this going ahead, only really play late war WW2 stuff so the current crop of battlegroup rules are not holding much interest for me.

Cold war battlegroup really interests me, mainly because the WW2 rules are so solid, but also because the market currently lacks good points based cold war stuff at this kind of scale.

So how long will the play testing process be?

Deane told be he caught a glimpse of Cold War on the ironfist Facebook, glad you posted p some here. The period isn't something I'm very familiar with but damned if I won't become so if a battlegroup version comes my way.

We couldn't get off the topic of potential Helo insertions at game day yesterday.

Playtest period... depends. Might be six or 18 months, all depends what issues we hit over the initial tests.

Helo... yep, gonna have those.

Your terrain is always so good, Big P - and the model's eye views are extraordinary. Not so keen on the models themselves - they're rather lumpy looking (although I'm guessing that's a Revell Spahpanzer Luchs in amongst the resin and metal).

A game like this could give Roco's sales a big push - they've been producing US and Bundeswehr armour for years. It's in 1/87 scale, but a smaller scale would make sense given the longer ranges that would be part of a modern game system. They never did much Soviet armour, so I guess you'd be re-fighting Reforger on a regular basis...

Not my figures or models, just the terrain is mine.

The figures are Liberation, not my choice, and for the actual game we will be replacing them all with Elhiem Figures to feature in the book.

Most of the tanks in the pics are plastic kits, either Revell or old Esci. The BMP-1s and BRDM1 are by Britannia.

Yes, your figures are normally better. That looks like the old Hasegawa Leopard 2 - I have one of those, complete with camo netting. I think it was the first 1/72 scale tank with one-piece tracks and running gear. I didn't recognise the ESCI models, but now I can see it's an ESCI Leopard I.
