Just wondering whether Typhus and a horde of plague zombies is a good idea or not in the current meta. Any input if you've had experience etc. would be nice. I think they're better than bog standard cultists, arent they?

GW is scared of girls. Why do you think they have so much trouble sculpting attractive female models? Because girls have cooties and the staff at GW don't like looking at them for too long because it makes them feel funny in their naughty place.

They are cheap, fearless objective holders on their own, and great for tarpitting big nasties (it takes at least a couple of turns for a WK or Knight to stomp his way through 25 zombies). So, yes, they tend to be better than regular cultists. The only exception are Helcult cultists, who also benefit from fearless and can shoot and run.

In my meta of Drop Pods and tough characters, having a wall of zombie flesh is great; 3-4 large squads of 25-30 keeps the other player out of my startzone. I used to run squads of 35, but for some reason I found the extra 5 bodies to be too unwieldy...I guess I hit the zombie threshold or something.

Now, the real conundrum is the requirement of Typhus; you really cannot discuss zombies without an analysis of Typhus as well. I like the big guy, but getting him quickly into combat (where he needs to be) can be tough. You almost need a Land Raider or an infiltrating squad, which adds to its own point issues. Plus, he cannot handle dreadnoughts or Str 10 hits at initiative. So, I usually go all-in (with 3-4 large squads of zombies, and at least 1 squad of Plague Marines, since he unlocks those as well) with the zombie theme, or I don't bother.

He can, but you're better off running him with either Nurgle Spawn or just throwing him with a retinue in a Spartan.

That may be true but it does save you a lot of points. But you'd really need to have a few other threats to make that work or he'll get shot to oblivion.

Zombies have no offensive output. But they are great as a road block.

Sometimes it's worth it to have your useless cultists GTG or run and hide.

Zombies are a good time for your opponent the first game or two, but then gets pretty boring. Which in itself is a strategy I suppose.

I would use more Plague Zombie lists myself if it weren't for the Typhus tax, or having to use IA 13 R&H as my Primary Detachment for just one zombie unit....

Here's hoping they add more options in the new book, and don't just eliminate it completely which would no doubt earn the ire of a few players I know with over 200 fully painted Zombies.

See, I just use cultist models since that's what the codex specifies!

They fare pretty well as Tarpitters, getting that many bodies for how cheap they are, plus fearless, they're also slightly more resilient than regular Cultists against small arms fire so yeah in that sense they're good.

Typhus is good, but he has to be facing up the right targets or else he's as squishy as the Zombies are against anything that's strength 10.

I usually run Typhus with 20 odd Zombies as meat shields and simply assault infantry so Typhus can get really stuck-in

He upgrades the zombies to have Furious Charge or something, but doesn't unlock Zombies themselves.

Anybody notice that Zombies don't have access to MoN? Always thought that odd.

I'm pretty sure he can as per his newest rules in IA: Apocaylpse. He still cannot unlock plague marines, being a sorcerer not a lord, but if all you want is zombies, he would be a cheaper option than Thypus.

I prefer him over Typhus because Chaos doesn't have good drop-pods. If that changed, He's be amazing.

Til then, I'll take my little plague nerd.

Marks are a reward, so lowly weak humans who can't handle a little Plague rot wouldn't be worthy of His mark...
