I like TVTropes as a creative resource, and for some of the funnier articles there. But it's had a really bad influence on discussion of media, because you can just say "Oh, this character is just [article name], and then take it as a given that because you could sum something up, that means it's bad and you have won the argument without actually arguing.
I agree. And it's not that Barret doesn't fit
some of the characteristics of the "angry black man" trope, but that he is so much more than that. He's a leader of AVALANCHE. He's a devoted father to an adopted daughter. He's a brave fighter who puts his life on the line for his friends, and continually returns to the fight, when he could just as easily justify staying behind to take care of Marlene, but he chooses to do the more difficult thing.
Is he a perfectly designed and realized character? No. But to sum him up as "just an angry black man" and a "racist caricature" is an egregious denial of the depth of his actual character.
