Guys,

Sorry if this is off-topic

I recently took-up Bolt Action as my game of choice... and yesterday, Warlord launched a deal that was too good to keep to myself...

Buy any of their Rulebooks, and get a free box set - working-out at around 50% discount (more in some cases!)

http://www.warlordgames.com/start-your-sizzling-summer-with-a-system-starter/

It's running until the end of the month - so there another week-or-so to go

Looks like I'll be stocking-up on all of their other systems - anyone had any experience with Black Powder?

It's insane, you can buy the $35 rulebook and get a $40 Soviet infantry box set for free.

You know, might not hurt to have a second rulebook around to loan out to friends, hmm, I am tempted...

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

You could sell them on ebay, so then if they buyer payed more than £25 it could be like Warlord was paying you to get the miniatures!

Runnin up on ya.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been thinking about getting into BA for a while. Just like the site said, no excuses. Great deal.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

I think I've decided. I'm not going for Japanese (yet). I'm going to get some Germans, and my brother is going to get some British. I'm trying to get a friend into it too, and have threatened to buy him some Russians!

I think the German Grenadiers looks like the best Plastic set to get, out of the 3 German ones. I'm also going to get the British Infantry. I'm not sure why there's only 25 in the British boxes! My friend seems to want the Russian Summer Infantry (40 guys in one box!!!).

I think we need HQ units too. I couldn't see a way to make the HQ unit using the plastic models, so I am thinking of ordering the British and Waffen SS HQs. I wish there was a way to keep my entire army plastic, as they seem more customizable and it doesn't seem right to mix materials!

To make the game more interesting I think we should have some tanks. I like the look of the Hetzer, and my brother wants a Cromwell.

With a HQ, a box of infantry, and a tank each, would we have equal enough armies? Will the Germans have the advantage over the British? Is there anything I'm missing?

Also, a very important question I wanted to ask: Paint and colour schemes. Is there an easy way to find out what paint I should get, and are Warlord Games' paints good? Also, I notice the Waffen SS and other Germans have green or camouflaged uniforms. I thought they wore blue-ish or black uniforms! Can I still paint them blue-ish or black and still be historically accurate? Can anyone recommend a good place to find out about WW2 uniforms?

Thanks.

I prefer all plastic too. You can customise the plastic models to make your HQ units - the amount of customising you do will depend on your modelling skills. I've removed the webbing from my command minis. The plastic sets contain enough pistol holsters, binoculars etc to equip your HQ models, but you might find you need to get an extra sprue or two.

From a modelling perspective, that sounds good. There isn't a plastic Hetzer kit (yet) in 1/56 scale, although Tamiya does one in 1/48 scale. If you prefer plastic, then the new Warlord StuG III is a very nice kit. Warlord also produces a plastic Cromwell.

I use GW paints, because they're durable and I'm familiar with them. However, that means mixing colours to get the right shade for WW2 subjects. A lot of people prefer Vallejo, although it tends to be better if you use an airbrush.

German uniforms is quite a complex subject. I find the best reference for painting is the Osprey series. You can buy the volume that's appropriate for the period you want. The Warlord Grenadiers you intend to buy appear to be Heer rather than SS, but some are wearing ponchos, which would be camouflaged. Helmet covers were also made of camouflaged material. The camouflage pattern was normally the 'splinter' type. By that stage of the war, the colour of German uniforms was essentially green. The "blue-ish" colour you are thinking of is probably the field grey of the earlier (more iconici) German uniform. A greyish-green would be fine, as there was never proper standardisation. Black uniforms were worn by Panzer troops (although less so later in the war). SS troops made much wider use of camouflage - initially in the form of smocks and helmet covers, then camouflaged uniforms.

I'll leave someone else to answer your questions about army lists.

Oops. I meant to reply to my original thread but... I responded here instead by complete accident! I'm not too sure what to do about that.

Is there something wrong with the Hetzer on the Warlord site? Is it the wrong scale? I'll consider a StuG III too! Thanks!

I have a bunch of GW paint already but I'm not sure if I have the right kinds. Perhaps I'll have to buy more and try making the appropriate colours myself.

The SS models seemed to be all metal. I was hoping I could use the grenadiers as if they were SS, by painting them with appropriate camouflage. That way I could use plastic models and still get what I want. Not sure how different they would look compared to the more legitimate SS. With the large amount of weapons they come with, I'm sure I can easy equip an entire squad with STG44s, and equip the other two with machineguns, and even make a sniper team with the scoped rifle.

Thanks for the reference suggestion and information! I'll take a look.

Flames of War also has some good painting resources.

Basic German uniforms: http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=110&art_id=2138&kb_cat_id=27

SS camo: http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=110&art_id=285&kb_cat_id=27

Warlord also sells Vallejo paints at their webstore, so you can order some with the models, if there's no Vallejo dealer near you.

The Warlord Hetzer is resin - personally, I prefer plastic. It also looks rather inaccurate, but that may not bother you.

Sure, you can do that - I think Warlord designed them so they could be used as SS as well. The SS had essentially the same uniforms in SS camouflage patterns. There were differences in detail, but I doubt anyone will notice or care.
