Warlord put this at the end of their Fallschirmjӓger pre-order article

"And as if German paras weren’t enough, our next two plastic infantry sets will cover yet more airborne troops…"

Spoiler:

I love paratroopers above all infantry, glad I didn't go for the metal ones just yet.

YAY! I have the metal ones, but some plastic would be fantastic.

Probably not a coincidence that WGI just published scenarios for Operation Fustian, pitting Brit Paras against German ones.

Brits need an update as those infantry models are really showing their age. Could go for some red devils with Denison smocks.

I'd prefered American in winter gear, I guess Paratroopers are pretty cool as well. Hoping they'll have a plastic jeep kit out soon to go with them.

I'm sure Winter US Troops are on their plastic schedule. It just makes sense. Especially as the Battle of the Bulge having provided such an "iconic" set of visuals for WW2, especially from a US perspective.

Winter US stuff is definitely coming and I think a few sculpts have even been previewed already.

It looks as though they are metal sculpts, however. There are indications that there will be Winter Germans in plastic.

I could go for some winter Germans to oppose my Russians.

Germans already have 2 new tooled plastic infantry sets recently released or upcoming. With a third, Warlord would be most likely over-exagerating the popularity of that faction to the detriment of the others in BA.

I don't disagree that the Germans get a lot of attention. But plastic kit manufacturers have always done this. The Germans are the Space Marines of historical gaming. Winter Germans will sell.

Well not really, the Paper Tigers are always a draws for the new wargamer but from the research I've done The Wermacht makes only about 25% to 1/3 of all armies [closer to Khador or WOC] being played in WW2 gaming. They're really not that [opular.

Your research is different to my experience...

I don't know any WW2 gamer who doesn't have at least one German Army.

I have four.

Okay, but the other armies include:

British (and all their sub nationality variants), American, Russian, Japanese, Finnish, Italian, French, Polish, and more. So, 25% of the big 5 is still more than they should have, and 1/3rd of the big 5 is massive. Unless one of the other armies is eating up all of the rest, that makes them most popular.

So, for one army that is hugely popular.

The two (main) theater nature of WWII makes it a bit different as well though. Japan was a major power, but really only engaged specialized forces of the US and Britain, and the main army of the Chinese (always tragically underrepresented in WWII gaming).

The blunt reason for German ubiquity is that Germany was the major Axis belligerent against the British, Russians, and Americans.

Unless you find games like US against USSR interesting, you need a lot of Germans to make events and games historically reasonable. Add in that the Germans had a major evolution in the Heer throughout the war, all while including some really interesting formations (Fallschrimjaeger, Waffen SS) and iconic armies (Panzers, Afrika Corps), and you get a lot of subtle diversity.

I think there's a more fundamental reason; German equipment looks cool. There's an aesthetic to the Panzers, as well as German weapons and uniforms, which appeals to people. Even people with little knowledge of WW2 can often spot a Panzer. Whether it's because there's something intrinsically 'military' about the shapes and angles, or we're all still partly brain-washed by Dr Goebbels' propaganda films and photos, I don't know. But it's pointless to pretend that German stuff doesn't have a broader appeal than anyone else's.

As a book publisher once said to me 'Nazi stuff sells books'...

Its much the same with miniatures I suspect.

Just look at historical book publications... The vast majority for WW2 focus on the German forces.

Well they obviously must be hiding them, much like they do with their SYW and AWI armies

Odd... cos I have AWI and SYW too...

Worth remembering though, ones own personal perception does not necessarily bear any relation to the rest of the hobby.

In fact, it pretty much means bugger all.

Cos if you went by my club, the 2nd Afghan War would be the 6th most played period... can't imagine that's true of the hobby in general.

I was actually just planning to order a force of British Airborne minis for Bolt Action, but if plastics are coming I'll hold off for that release. Have any new rumors of when we might expect these surfaced?

Absolutely. I'm building a number of opposing forces in 28mm. That's 8th Army Commonwealth vs DAK (no Italians for me!). It's Soviets vs Ostfront Germans. (With a small side helping of Finns to fight both in various timeframes). It's Brit Commandoes vs Germans. It's Paras vs Germans. It's US forces vs Germans. and it's Japanese vs USMC. And soon, a Fally/MC force that will be able to fight pretty much most of the allies.

Because ultimately, Hungarians, Finns, Italians, Bulgarians and Romanians just aren't as iconic or interesting (or flexible) as Germans.

I'm feeling pretty good about whatever Warlord come out with for Brit and American paras! Certainly lines up with the sarissa precision Belgian house they are selling.

Brits and yanks need an update!

I'm still working on my panzergrenadiers. Love them. They are are a bit cartoonish but as frozenwastes said it best,Bolt action is the comic book of the movie of the war. So im ok with it.
