How would a Grand Cruiser compare to a Strike Cruiser? To the best of my knowledge, Grand Cruisers are just slower versions of Battle Cruisers, while Strike Cruisers are just regular Cruisers with a complement of Astartes for boarding actions and significantly thicker armour, so, would the superior firepower of the Grand Cruiser win, or would the Strike Cruiser be able to survive for long enough to board it?

Also, what would be some Xeno equivalents of an Imperial Battleship?

To quote a fictional character... "Let's make this fun!"

There was a story in the SM omnibus where a single kroot killed 2-3 marines then ate their gene seed and became a Kroot-startes.

We must all join the Kroot-startes...

Grand cruisers are a class of ship the Imperium can no longer build due to having lost the knowledge of building sufficiently powerful yet compact drives. They are basically pocket battleships.

In BFG terms, a grand cruiser had 10 hitpoints versus a battleship's 12 and a cruiser and strike cruiser's 6. Strike cruisers are not meant for direct fleet slugging matches. Their design goal is to overwhelm local defenses enough to deliver their Marines into the action.

As for Imperial battleship equivalents, there are all the various alien battleships in BFG like the Eldar Void Stalker, Necron tomb ship, Tyranid hive ship, etc...

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

Grand Cruisers are sort of a cross between a true Cruiser and a Battleship. While many types are no longer construct-able, its not true that the Imperium can't build any more. Its mostly that many of the designs are old and outdated.

The main style of Imperial fleet engagements has changed since the Great Crusade. The Imperium used to heavily rely on ships with massive broadside that battled in lines at close range. But over time their doctrine has been modified to a heavier reliance on torpedoes and longer ranges. This let to the development of the armored prow and more torpedoes. This rendered many of the older Grand Cruiser designs obsolete, although existing ships continue to get used.

Its sort of how Naval warfare in the 1600s and 1700s shifted. The Galleon with its massive, but short ranged, broadside was phased out for faster and more maneuverable frigates and ships of the line.

The Imperium has the most ship variety of all the factions in BFG. While the Imperial Navy has over a dozen types of Battleship and Grand Cruiser, most of the other factions(besides Chaos) only have one or two.

Here is the list of Xeno Battleships,

Eldar: Void Stalker
Dark Eldar: None
Orks: Deathdeala, Slamblasta, Hamma Class Battlekroozer
Necrons: Cairn Class Tombship(which is frankly worth 3ish Imperial Battleships)
Tyranids: Hive Ship. While its technically only 1 type of ship, with the upgrade options there are dozens and dozens of ways to customize a Hive ship.

The current Imperial Navy doctrine of armored prows and torpedoes is a direct result of its degeneration in technology. For every step forward (which is usually a rediscovery of older tech anyway) there is usually 2 steps backward in another area. In the Imperium, older usually means better, not outdated. That is why the older ship designs, such as the ones that defected to Chaos, are faster and tend to have heavier weapon broadsides. Prime examples of this are the Murder class cruiser, predecessor to the Lunar class as the mainstay of Battlefleet Obscuras between M33-M37, the Carnage class, and the speedy Slaughter class cruiser. The dominance of the armored prow and torpedoes paradigm is because it is easier (i.e. lower tech) to slap on slabs of armor and put in torpedo tubes than it is to make and maintain long range firing lance weapons such as those fielded on the Murder class.

Grand cruisers are larger than battlecruisers, which in contrast are basically cruisers with dorsal weapons added. The Imperium still makes battleships and battlecruisers, but grand cruisers are relegated to reserve fleets or mothballed. It is explicitly said the grand cruiser fell out of favor when the Imperium could no longer build sufficiently powerful engines:

The grand cruiser was a precursor to the battlecruisers which are now more prevalent in most Imperial fleets. Almost rivalling battleships in its ability to withstand damage and lay down a barrage of fire, the grand cruiser fell out of favour when the means for constructing sufficiently powerful engines was lost (more recently built engines were incapable of attaining a useful combat speed).
