Just curious if any successor chapters would have their parent legions icons on anything. Or did they straight strip it of paint/icons.

Depending on the chapter, and the parent chapter, yeah probably some would maintain the link to their past. Others may go fresh.

When the organization changed, many paintjobs changed too. But some could have kept parts of their equipment as it was ( if the new scheme was close to the old one for example ) or just kept a spot on it "original". There are several examples of variants of a chapters colors and they may add things like campaign or army badges too, the paintjob isn't written in stone.

I've always wanted to create a Blood Ravens chapter assembled from models of other chapters that were repainted "poorly" enough to show that almost none of their weapons or vehicles were originally theirs.

The Soul Drinkers maintain at least one original relic from their parent chapter.
(For the love of God take my word for it and don't try to read those novels yourself.)

My Blood Ravens are make from bit from different chapters , mainly blood angles and Grey knights with a bit of dark angels and the odd space wolf item just to represent that , and the paint style i make then a bit different of the normal models, for example the ultramarines I still have yet to convert into Ravens are painted in a way that they are like "fresh from the Forge" spotless , clean and pristine , like the ultramarines , my Ravens are painted in a more worn look , darker reassess , chips in some spots in the armor old pattern gear mix with new one , all that would be expected form a less supported chapters.
Most of the bits maintain a mix between the Raven colors and the heritage of the item , like the Grey knights items being mainly gold and silver and the white/pale robes from the Dark Angels .

It depends on the Chapter. For example some Imperial Fist successors also use a fist theme, like the Crimson Fists. And some Blood Angels successors use the blood drop, wings or chalice. Others don't.

The Marines Malevolent scavenge and literally don't even strip it. They just wear a jumblefeth of parts. They're disgusting thugs, and barely worthy of the name Adeptus Astartes.

Imperial Knights- 5 Standard Knights / 3 Cerastus Knights
Officio Assassinorum - 4 Assassins
CSM - 500pts? Maybe? Its from the Officio Assassinorum box so I'm pretty sure its not enough to run in a CAD
Vampire Lords- I have no idea I bought it like two days before I left country and they're still in storage so I'll have to see when I get back.] |

Many of them would have altered things, but that wasn't as big a deal. There was less importance placed on the superficial things back then.

Alright so follow on question, could I use the ultramarines upgrade spru on my Hawk Lords and count them as "relics" or would it look stupid?

There is an old story about a suit of UM TDA that was loaned to the BAs. Everytime they repainted it to match the angel’s colors, the wearer died. The suit knew it was just borrowed.

Did Fulgrim Just Behead Ferrus?

Yes, they would normally be redone in the new chapter's colors and markings. If you get a chance to look through Imperial Armour 2, you'll see several examples of Heresy and Great Crusade era vehicles in the colors of successor chapters.
