Subject: Dragonfall GT Battle Report 2 of 5, Eldar v Orks *COMPLETE*
So, having scored less than the maximum number of points, I knew I would avoid facing one of the top lists straightaway. Not going to lie, this is my standard strategy in straight battle point tournaments; I can't lose to what I don't face. Tricksy? Cowardly? Yes and yes. However, there's only one SURE way to win and that is to bring a hammer and destroy everything in your path, earning every point along the way.
For my second round, i am paired with an Ork player that remembers the Rogue Trader days and has the models to prove it (the olde-timey attack squig is one of the cutest things I've ever seen).
His list was very much in the spirit of the tournament, and as such, is a little hard to describe. He had a big truck with 6 or so meganobs in it, with a kustom force field guy and a warboss--Ghaz I think. He also had units of 7 or so bikes, 15 or 20 slugga boys with big shootas, a looted wyvern (I think--it was an IG vehicle with a barrage weapon on it), a vehicle with a zzap gun lookin thing (my descriptive vocabulary depresses even me) with some boyz in it, a unit of grots, and something that would be outflanking (some kind of walker).
I got the trait that lets me infiltrate the warlord and three non-vehicle units. I gave it to the avengers and the Distortion Cannons, attaching the Autarch to the cannons so he could deploy with them (sharing his leadership and their T7).
The mission was Emperor's will, where my objective would count as objectives 1-3 for the purposes of Maelstrom, and my opponent's would count as objectives 4-6. I imagined this to be a very low scoring game, depending far more on luck of the draw than anything.
I win the roll to go first, but give away first turn, as I will be able to reliably counter-deploy (via infiltration). He sits the looted vehicle on his Emperor's Will objective and then surrounds it with the grots. Boys and bikes go on the left flank. The zzap wagon is on the right flank. The big truck with the mega nobs in it is central. He keeps the one unit capable of outflanking in reserves.
I deploy my spiders on the edge of my DZ, behind a VERY large (biggest I've ever seen, I think) piece of LoS terrain. His artillery is low BS and only AP4, so I feel fine deploying with a 2" spacing. Since he pretty much has to come to me in order to score Maelstrom (and to win the game), I 'infiltrate' the Distortion Cannons into my own DZ, on top of my Emperor's Will. My Autarch is out of LoS but still attached to the cannons. The serpents (with the avengers in them) are placed to get shots on the bikes or side armor on the looted vehicle. I keep the hawks in reserves along with the Cloudstrike (and dragons).
Having given away the first turn, I attempt to seize the initiative and roll up a '6', taking it. Game on.
Eldar Turn One
Spoiler:
I have two goals for my first turn, reduce the number of bikes and take out the looted vehicle. I put the spiders and one serpent into the bikes (including the shield, since he doesn't have much S8 or stronger) and position the other serpent at 36", so just the scatter lasers. The looted vehicle will get a 5+ cover save. Moving up to dump the shield would very likely net me the vehicle, but would give up two in return. The Autarch and Distortion Cannons chill where they are.
Shooting sees the bikes reduced to just two or three, with the spiders running/jet pack moving back out of LoS. The other serpent puts a 'shaken' result on the wyvern, but only 1 hull point. Not too bad for turn one.
Orks Turn One
Spoiler:
My opponent doesn't have a lot of good targets to shoot at. He pushes his big truck up the board, going to the right around the big terrain piece in the middle of the table. The zzap truck (with rocket guys in it) comes back to the left to line up on a serpent. I'm expecting him to run the boys up the table but he doesn't.
The shooting phase is entirely ineffective. I think I only lose a hull point from the nearest serpent. He goes flat out with the truck, bringing it well within range of my DCannons.
Eldar Turn Two
Spoiler:
Almost everything goes my way. The destructive capacity of the Eldar shooting is mind boggling. The hawks and the Cloudstrike come in. Due to the overlapping fields of fire, I am confident I will be able to destroy the big truck and everything inside of it. I disembark the dragons for rear armor. The falcons are positioned to shoot at whatever comes out of the big truck. I drop the hawks into his backfield (having drawn a card requiring me to hold his objective in order to score a point). Two things have to happen there; the Grots have to be completely destroyed, and the serpent (or serpents) have to finish taking out the looted vehicle. I position the spiders centrally to either finish off the bikes or contribute to handling the big truck and its passengers. The Autarch, again, sits tight, out of line of sight.
In shooting, the dragons destroy the big truck with ease (blowing it up multiple times). I lose TWO dragons in the explosion. Then, being so big and restricted to 'disembarking' into the footprint of the vehicle, the mega nobs are the perfect target for the cannons. I score some 14 hits and then proceed to roll SIX 6's, brutal. Only two hits fail to produce wounds, and he fails every invulnerable. The unit is utterly destroyed. The spiders shoot the bikes and destroy them. The turrets on the falcons swing around and take shots at the zzap truck and...get a pen result and blow it up. Miraculously, he doesn't lose any boys in the explosion, but they are pinned. The hawks' shooting lays waste to the grots. Not EVERYTHING goes my way though, the serpents fail to do even a hull point to the looted vehicle.
Eldar score 1 of 2 possible Maelstrom points.
Orks Turn Two
Spoiler:
His outflanking unit does not come in. He moves his big mob of boys up to assault a serpent, there isn't anything else to move. In shooting, the pinned orks with the rocket launchers take a hull point off (and stun) a very surprised Falcon. He fires the big shootas on the looted vehicle at the hawks, but only kills one or two. He assaults the serpent (I asked why not multi-charge, forgetting that they gain +1S on the charge, which they would lose if they went after both serpents). The boys manage to hull out one serpent without blowing it up.
Orks score 0 of 2 possible Maelstrom points.
Eldar Turn Three
Spoiler:
There aren't many decisions to make. The dragons re-embark and the Cloudstrike (minus the stunned one) shuffle around to line up on either the looted vehicle or the pinned orks nearby. The spiders set up to shoot the pinned orks. The serpents move away from the boys. I debate disembarking the avengers and decide not to.
My first shooting attack (spiders) kills the pinned orks to the man (boy?). The falcons follow that up by destroying the looted vehicle, despite the 4+ cover save. My opponent concedes here.
Results & Performance Assessment
Spoiler:
No surprise, a complete victory for the Eldar; 25-0.
Performance Assessment is partly based on my estimation of how the dice went, and partly based on the decisions I made for the unit.
Autarch (C): Other than having a Warlord Trait (that was useful!) He was irrelevant.
Dire Avengers: (C): This is just for conferring Infiltrate to their Dedicated Transports. Otherwise they were irrelevant.
Wave Serpents (B/C): Got good angles/infiltration locations for them. They definitely aren't what they used to be without Laserlock and an S7 shield!
Swooping Hawks (B): Better this game. They had an obvious (low toughness, low armor save) target, an obvious purpose (score my opponent's backfield objective), and I didn't throw them away. This is a better representation of their capacity/utility.
Warp Spiders (A/B): Brutally effective.
Fire Dragons (A/B): Like the hawks, the dragons' performance in this game is a better example of how they are 'supposed' to perform.
Distortion Cannons (A/B): I deployed them correctly (as he deployed his grots and looted vehicle correctly), to sit on my Emperor's Will objective. Obliterating the unit of mega nobs was more than I could ask for (although, to be honest, exactly what I could expect).
Falcons (Cloudstrike) (B/C): So I Cloudstruck danger close again. This time there was almost no retaliation, though if things had not gone as well as they did, there very much would have been retaliation. The tremendous success of this maneuver will come back to bite me in the very next game (this isn't so much foreshadowing as a spoiler for the next battle report).
Overall: B. Infiltration, Stealing the Initiative, Cloudstrike, and zeroed-in Distortion Cannons = win.
Here's the pics I took of our game, I knew going in I was toast, I considered camping around my objective and trying for a draw but heck it just would have taken longer and given the same end result. I had no answers for your firepower and mobility. Maybe Next time we meet Pansie I can give a ya more of a Rukk!

I beg your pardon, But I did kill that Serpent in turn two, the boys took one hullpoint off and the Nob finished it with his Klaw, Then the other Serpent and the Swooping hawks shredded the boy mob.
I like to mark on peoples army lists what I killed after tourney games, yours has 1 serpent dead, weapon blown off Falcon, and a couple Swooping hawks. Pitiful but there were some losses!

Now I may be remembering wrong. But I do believe if you win the roll to deploy first and you give your opponent the first turn you do not get to try to seize the initiative.

If the tournament used 7th edition rules for rolling for deployment, you'd be absolutely right. At Dragonfall, the winner of the roll deployed first AND went first (no option to hand off first turn after deployment) unless he gave it away immediately.
