I've got the blue nailed down for how I want my Deathskulls to turn out (Caledor, Nuln Oil, Hoeth Blue, Fenresian Grey highlight)

What secondary colours would go best with it/fit Deathskulls fluff better?

You could go the traditional route and do blue /white. Or pick something crazy. I do blue yellow for a deffskull, badmoon hybrid..

White checkered dags over blue background is the fluffy Deathskull. They also like to paint blue on their skin in various patterns.

IMHO, they loot everything including uniform materials, so tend to look like they dressed themselves in a second-hand clothing store.

Even their favoured blue won't be consistent, except by chance - they'll happily wear anything blue they come across. Plus the Braveheart-style blue paint if they come across any, although again they won't be bothered what shade of blue it is.

I've got the blue skin down Would it make sense for the skin and armour to be the same colour or should one be darker than the other (if so which way round)?

Also like white (think it will stand out against hoeth blue) but I've primed my models in black, will this be a problem? If not, what's the best way to go about painting white (highlights and stuff)?

As a personal preference, I would probably base the models black but lay down some ultramarine blue on the parts you want to color, working in the lighter hoeth blue on top of it to give some variation in the color.

For the whites, lay down an off white bone color first, then you can go back over it with your brighter white. I usually do the off white & sponge on the lighter color to give the paint an effect like it's worn & dirty.

If you want an idea of what this would look like, check out the ork tower in my gallery. it has a few different color variations that might help.

I'm going to GW to get some paints tomorrow and I have ceramite white, what would you recommend to layer and highlight it with (probably going to do an Aggrax Earthshade wash, or Nuln Oil depending on the model)?

I also have Maccragge Blue, Teclis Blue and Lothern Blue, would these be any good for armour/skin, or would the aforementioned lighter colours work better?

Also how do you do checkered patterns? With transfers or a steady hand?

Ceramite white is about as white as you can get, Maybe use it to highlight over screaming skull or Ushabti Bone. I like to stick with Agrax and Sepia to give a dingy look, but it's really all about what looks good to you. Same thing goes for the Blues, I had to experiment for a while before I landed on more of a turquoise color for my guys. I would just look at as much reference material for other death skull armies to see what works best for you.

The bright side to experimenting is that your orks won't look so uniform, which is always a plus in my book.

Alright cheers for the help I'll have a look in GW tomorrow and see what takes my fancy regarding whites, they've got a handy chart with different colours (shade, highlights and everything) that details what the final product looks like.

In regards to Deathskulls (or Orks in general) fluff, what sort of terrain do they usually fight on? I've got some old muddy bases but I'm wondering whether to put my boyz on desert bases instead.

I really like the bright "enchanted blue" for my deathskull models.

or the chekered patterns you could also first paint a strip of bleached bone and after that you cover the strip with small square stickers (chekered pattern). Then you cover the rest of the model with tape and use the black spray afterwards. Then you remove the stickers with a needle or scalpel. Then you clean up the pattern if needed by hand, and highlight the bleached bone by adding white in the mix and highlight the black with grey..

Painting the skin and armour the same way will make them look the same. Probably not an effect you want, unless he's made his armour from Orkskin leather.

Darker, lighter, doesn't matter. I'd make the highlights on the armour sharper than on the skin, anyway. Perhaps using a different highlight colour, too.
