Hey there everyone, could someone help me with the rules on airplanes? So far nobody in my group has one, but I think someone bought one that I'll be fighting against tonight (I'm necron). Does a unit have to have skyfire to even be able to shoot at a plane? I don't have anything with that rule, am I totally fethed?

if you dont have skyfire other units can shoot at it but its always shapshots, in addition other planes ignore that rule and can shoot each other normally. do be aware that some weapons cant shoot at planes like flamers (but that was sort of a given). you also cant shoot them with blast/lb weapons

so no not having skyfire doesnt ruin your plans, but it will really hinder you if its more than say 1 plane

If you check the BRB for rules on Flyers, you'll find all the information you need. This includes movement restrictions, how they come onto the table, restrictions for firing against them, and what happens when they are destroyed.

This ^ Dakka isn't a rulebook....
But, Flyers:
Can be shot by most direct weapons, needing skyfire to roll normally to hit.
Have a minimum speed as well as a maximum.
Cannot turn much, meaning they fly off the table quite often.
Sometimes have the option to enter hover mode, turning them into a skimmer instead.
Get to fire more often than normal, somewhat making up for the limited fire arc.

Indeed. Think of them as a chunk of flexible artillery that comes on from reserves with a reserve roll.

They're well armed, but tend to only get 3-4 shooting phases in the game and struggle to shoot at the same thing twice.

You can win a game - even against a flyer-heavy army - without skyfire units. Just be prepared to hunker down on objectives whilst getting shot at from the air. A lot.
