It's possible that I could end up moving down to the Austin, TX area in the next year or so and was wondering what the 40k scene was like there.

I moved to austin a year and a half ago, my experience so far has been negative. Its super competitive, it was hard to just have a game with someone who wasnt min maxing everything. If thats what yor into, then its great.

That's rather unfortunate.

While there are a lot of people in Austin that are super competitive, there is also a large group that just likes to play to have fun. The Austin 40k community isn't a small one and there are monthly events to attend and even a nice store in San Antonio that hosts events regularly and it's not too far of a drive. If you're worried about not finding a game or good people to hang out with, don't be.

That's good, because my current group is super casual.

This. I played in Austin for years before moving to back to the east coast. Dragon's Lair holds a tournament on the first Sunday of the month and it has a large crowd with lots of different players. Easy to go and meet people who fit your preferred play style. Wonko's runs a monthly narrative tournament with each tournament being a mini-campaign with themed, wacky rules to match. Austin actually has a really large community and I miss playing at Dragon's Lair. The community there was excellent.
