Been wanting to name some of my Renegade Guard and their big artillery guns but haven't come up with anything yet.

Which models (Infantry or vehicles) have you named and what names have you seen? Pictures welcomed!

In my Old Tau army, anything ranked Shas'ui or Higher had a name. In my 3rd ed Necron , my Foot lord and Wraithlord(a Destroyer lord kitbash I wish I never sold) were named.

I'm working on naming Squad Leaders and so forth in my Iron Warriors list as I grow it out, Right now all I have is my Warsmith, Genos, named. Still working on everyone else.

I run 2 daemon princes and it's easier to refer to them by a name when telling my opponent what I'm doing.

It has to be something obvious when you look at the model to to useful though, e.g: my prince with feathered wings is referred to as "Fluffy Wings" (not my idea, just what it started being called, giving me the cliche and ironic "cute" names, I'm afraid).

You only get a name if you do something heroic (and hopefully useful). Like the Sister Superior who was the lone survivor of her squad and still secured an objective, or the last battle sister of a squad that managed to keep some Eldar jetbikes in combat until the game ended so they couldn't go off to score.

I want to say this is a good rule. Ill wait until someone does something exceptional. Already had a single tau (I have a few mixed in with my infantry) roll 1s for leadership and hold an objective turn six . He was promoted to Command Vox of my Renegade Command Squad, now I just need to think of a name hmm.

This list looked good to me since it lists the show the name came from:

There are a few things out there to help.
If you can see a historical or cultural tie-in for your army, there should be a list there for it.

Well a few of mine are named, first up a few Tyrannies from the Turnips.

Brian, the tyrant

Named because he looks like a Brian to me, can almost imagine him running an accounts department somewhere.

Cheryl, the crone

Essentially the utterly terrible pun was just too hard to avoid.

Cuddles, the carnifex

There is also a gene stealer called Gavin, but I don't have a picture of him.

My FoW armies also have a coupled of named "heroes", firstly the Germans, led by the long suffering "Haans Von Haans", who's competence matched the originality of his name.

The British are led by Sir Poncenby-Smythe, who lives in fear of a decently large bullet with his name on it

My Soviets are commanded by Uruda N. Bolokov, aided by Kutcha Kokov the commissar, the Team Yankee forces have a relative called Nokya Blokov. In all cases the names are exactly the sort of terrible humour the people I work with have to suffer daily.

Also have my warhammer Orc warboss, the legend that is Thangrot, an orc followed by his minions more out of bewilderment and amazement than anything else, Led by his more able sidekick a night goblin called Earwax due to highly selective deafness ignoring some of his bosses more 'special' schemes.

Names for the FoW models came post various games, the personality of Haans has grown over time, the Tyrannies were named as I built them.

Every single tank, artillery piece, machine or vehicle I have created has a name. From my Ordinatus Majoris to the brave little Leman Russ tanks. Only a handful of troops have names. Besides my commander of course.

Its an old one, but its the "most recent"

Each tank has some sort of modification/conversion/experimental weapon/something to it that helps give its name.
Just a few.

Ordinantus Majoiris, Sonic Disruptor (still being tinkered on modeling wise): "MXY-9591 Omnissiah's Sword"

It towers over the rest of the army. its physically huge. Its main weapon platform I'm sure is taller than a FW Reaver.

I also have a war zeppelin, The Rage of the Heavens. (top left of full army pic)

various tanks:

The Hammer (long barreled 190mm high velocity Vanq cannon)

Quantum Annihilation (Quantum Singularity device, "demolisher"):

Raildriver (magnetic acceleration "laser destroyer"):

and there are plenty more. If they don't have a name I simply havn't gotten around to getting them one.

I have named each of my 400 plus orks, some more lovingly than others, writing the names on the bases.

Some of my favorites:

-col. crazybeard: my old 2nd ed runtherd model. Traditional demands he be armed with a Shokk prod and charge at whatever the most ridiculous trophy available is. He has slain hive tyrants, Terminators, Draigo, and greater daemons. Much fewer now that GW bafflingly Nerfed the harmless Shokk Prod, but he still gets in his licks.

-Da Barber of Sevork: This Killa Kan crushed more vehicles than I think anything else in my army, and always seemed to survive anything thrown at him. He has been shelved, defeated finally by GW breaking the knees of the devastatingly OP AV11 walkers who had the audacity to occasionally kill a space marine.

-Really really uge Zog: I keep a bunch of power armor bits on hand from my space wolves and every time this big Mek downs a space marine in spectacular enough fashion I paint a piece up to match that SMs colors and add it to Zog, who has moved from Big Mek to occasionally Deff Dread status in recent years. Eventually I hope he will achieve Stompa or (if GW fixes their rules) Morkanauts status.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Lost in a blizzard, somewhere near Toronto

I name all of my characters, from HQ's on down to unit champions. Likewise all my vehicles get named, even the dedicated transports.

Now obviously I can't give out the names of my Daemonic legions, (only I can know their True Names!), but beside their name, all of the Greaters/Princes/Heralds also have a number of monikers, such as my 'fighter' Tzherald w/Mutating Warpsword who's titles include 'The Altered One' and 'Accursed Conjurer'.
Being the lowest of the low, the unit champions will only ever have a basic name.

Likewise I name all my squads, such as my various Pink Horror squads for example, which go by names such as 'The Coruscating Host', 'The Shimmering Whirlwinds', etc...
Meanwhile, a Bloodletter unit for example is known as 'The Ebonite Goreblades'.

It just adds that extra level of narrative & personality to the armies, and it's fun to track each unit's history as they play more and more games!

The Ebonite Goreblades for example, are were absolutely infamous back in 5th edition for being nothing even close to their namesake, routinely never showing up before Turn 4+, and then promptly getting their arses kicked senseless the odd time they ever would manage to get a charge off!
Since the 6th edition codex however, they've earned a reputation for soaking up a decent amount of enemy shooting, and pulling off longshot assault thanks to their Banner of Blood! The only things they seem unable to kill however, are Psykers.

I agree that the memorable circumstance is probably the best for naming.
Even better to have a brief note on the event.

I had tried to think of broad "rules" for each race for naming:

Orks: Verb-based with their common accepted form of spelling. Git-Ur-Fxd Doc or mekboy.... etc.

Dark Eldar: Elegant but to do with pain, torture, darkness and death. Boneweaver, Feathercut, Bloodkiss, Coldcaress.

Tau: Asian in general would work well: Asnee-Aroon (lightening dawn), Heng-Hee (Eternal brightness), Isamu (Courageous warrior).

Skitarii: I was tempted to go with fictional computer names and add a number at the end that increments with each death: Moxon, Unicomp, Peerssa, Shirka, Ghostwheel, Continuity, Moniac.

The human based armies can pretty much steal from any culture or time that seems suitable.

A revolution is an idea which has found its bayonets.

I mostly just name HQs and such. Such as my space marine lord executioner is called "Hank the axe guy".

For naming stuff when you've run out of names (happens to me a lot) is fantasynamegenerators.com because they actually have warhammer 40k names in the pop culture section.

I name my stuff often but not everything.

All planes are named after girls in my life or old lovers (to keep with the nose art style) and their nicknames along with a serial number and a piece of unique Chinese caligraphy, So for example I have.

Vendetta NO.1 "Shen" (沈) "W12" (village girl)
Vendetta NO.2 "Fong" (方) "HK97" (Canton queen)
Stormraven was "Huang" (黄) "2014" (Wenzhou woman)

I also name tanks after places or heros of mine,

My wyvern is named "小和山" (xiaoheshan)
My first hammerhead was named "毛泽东"

My mate came up naming my CCS after a dream team if grime MCS but I never wrote them on the bases. But I remember the main comander was named "Wiley", the commissar "Mr Wong" and the banner bearer "skepta". (If anyone gets those referenceres very well done.)

All my armies (except Tyranids) have HQ's and upgraded sergeants named. Orks and Chaos name their vehicles, for example:
Killforge and 'Slauterwurk are predators.
Soulbreach is a vindicator.
FellHaven is a raider, etc.

Even squads occasionally have names, such as The Silent, Violation, The Reborn for rubric marines, chaos bikers and possessed marines respectively. It's all in fun! Some people name every man in their army.
