I feel confident with my tac list enough that I can say I haven't played an army or scenario that I felt I had no chance against. I run 6x10 vanguard in flesh tearers drop pods. One group has plasma, the rest arc rifles. Then a marine apothecary, 5 scouts, 5 marines with a rhino I usually use for my culexus, 2 dune crawlers with 2 neutron cannons and 2 dune crawlers with Icarus arrays. Handles armor like knights like a champ, does decent against flyrant spam with dune crawlers and sheer numbers of boolets, good against dark angels jink spam even with white scars thanks to all the vanguard having omnispex, thunerwolf and super friends can get countered hard with a culexus to debuff and a couple str 10 small blasts and 40 is vanguard shooting them at bs 7. About the toughest match I get is a well played necron decursion or marine Gladius which since I consider them TAC in the first place makes sense. Also all eldar jet bikes is pretty tac too.

warhammer 40k mmo. If I can drive an ork trukk into the back of a space marine dread and explode in a fireball of epic, I can die happy!

These days with so many tournaments running variants and new scenarios, I think it's important to build to the mission as much as what your opponent is going to put down. There are many times when your not going to match an opponents firepower or durability, but if you can win on mobility and snagging objectives you can still win.

Exalted for truth.

More often than not, games of 40k are won not by tabling your opponent, but on objectives. Ideally, you want enough firepower to support your army and shift units off objectives, enough mobility to take objectives, and enough scoring units to hold plenty of objectives.

What kinds of capabilities should I use as a checklist for seeing if a list makes sense as a Take All Comers list.

This question has two parts for me:

1) I'm building an army from scratch and will start with a TAC list to use at my FLGS for non-competitive games. It's a laid back group with some variety of lists an no particular army is dominant.

2) By next summer I'll be doing a tournament. What does it take to be TAC for that.

I'm not looking for army specific advice I'm looking for what kinds of capabilities make a list TAC e.g. how much AT, what kind of anti-infantry, other things. I'm getting back into this after having last played 3rd edition.

Thanks,
Steven

I wrote this a while back and though some small parts of it come from 6E most of it is still relevant.

In my opinion the space marine battle comapny and eldar scat bikes+wraith knight lists are tac. I don't think they have any match up where their chips are down because of list building. Everything else has a counter (e.g. tau vs psychic dead stars/cover armies (ad mech, ravenwing) vs tau, psychic deadstar s vs obj sec and culexus.

Funny enough it's those two armies that don't need allies.
