I am looking for some ways to spice up my basing for Ultramarines. So far I've just used some fairly uniform sand and some little bits of cork, and I'm painting the edge Steel Legion Drab. It's kind of almost a desert/dry area feel. Any ideas? I don't have a drill, so I can't pin my miniatures.

Mordheim Turf static grass clumps? I use them on my bases and love them. Also use junk and bitz to decorate 40k bases and paint them up as rusted debris.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-) |

Grass and small rocks add a surprising amount of depth to a base.
There are "scorched grass" packs available from many companies.

I second this suggestion, as I use those grass tufts on my own bases. I also use Citadel Texture paints instead of sand.

I put sprue cut to 1/2 pieces in a blender from goodwill. Sand from Home Depot, Medium Ballast (looks like sand its walnut shell so it's light and takes paint)
I started casting my own bases a few years ago I make 10-20 bases with materials; make a mold and cast them. Depending on how you make them you can even use the same bases for different terrain. Urban base? Add a little water effect and turf; BAM! Abandoned Swamp Temple.

Ask your opponents for bitz and stick on the bases, pva glue+baking soda = snow.

Years ago I had an army on sand/desert bases, I bought a box of skeletons for fantasy and loped em up and put bones and stuff on the bases, like it was the site of a old battle.

Bits of sprue sticking out at jaunty angles painted in lead Belcher make great wreckage. Unused weapon options painted up in a different armies color with some blood for the blood on the edges make good severed limbs. Buy a crappy old used rhino off eBay and get creative with your sprue cutters and turn it into dozens upon dozens of cool debris pieces.
