So I want to run this as my transport for Vulcan and Firedrakes. With AV12 all round and 4HP, 20 man capacity and the Assault vehicle rules at 250pts with lascannons it looks like an excellent option but I don't see it being run often or on net lists. Is their something about it that makes the Spartan that much better?

Can't you take an Assault Ram in 30k?

If you like the model and want to run it, then run it. That's kind of the point behind 30k.

You can, but with the list I want to run I couldn't afford it as it's 305pts base. I'm not a fan of the model either, the Strike Eagle is much better looking IMO.

My Ravenguard list has a Storm Eagle I use for transporting terminators. I personally haven't had a problem, but some dislike the notion of a transporting aircraft when their are so many sicarans around for being too light on survivability to put so many eggs in one basket. It's just why you can't look at unit in vacuum; I take it with a fire raptor or another aircraft that in their own are threatening and by drawing even a bit of fire provide an osmotic defense that makes a significant difference.

I have a Storm Eagle, I do like it very much however I would not use it to transport a primarch and their bodyguard simply because of how long it takes to get it's contents where they need to go. If you fail the first turn reserve roll Vulkan and his boys won't be doing anything for four turns, that's a very long time for such a huge portion of your army to be doing very little. People favour the Spartan because with a little luck you can pull a turn 2 charge, which is the earliest the storm eagle can even be on the board, plus there's no risk of the Spartan crashing and killing everything inside except Vulkan. Still, I'd rather take a Caestus over a Storm Eagle for delivering my melee death star, it may start at 305 but the eagle will be around 285 after you've bought it the upgrades it needs to be effective.

In my games it's always been a very useful unit, it gets what needs to go where it needs to be but more often than not it does it too late to really impact the final result.

Still, like others have said, you should use the model you want in 30k, that should always be your first consideration when taking your units in 30k in my opinion.

My last game i put a 10 man tactical squad in my storm eagle; even though 'ride of the valkyrie' was playing in my head it still got shot down as soon as it came on - there were four survivors.
I therefore recommend taking out any mortis dreadnoughts before flyers come on.

A Storm Eagle is an excellent transport option but the problem is that you're looking at a Turn 4 assault, that's too long for a unit to be out of the game. So until there is a way to get it to come in guaranteed turn 2 people will always favour a spartan for Primarch transport.

It's also a horrible model to put together. I've built a fire raptor and the chassis is a nightmare.

In 30k there is always loads of Skyfire so factor that into your train of thought.

It looks so good and I so excited to assemble it by the time I got it put together I hated it.

A thousand times this, I was so excited when it arrived but that quickly changed as I've never hatred a assembling a model more than the Storm Eagle. It's totally put me off ever assembling a Forge World Model again. I'd rather pay someone to do it then ever do it again.

I think the reason is because between the Storm eagle or Spartan, people would rather put together the Spartan.


The Storm Eagle's single long resin side plates have became a nightmare for many modellers. It can take alot of work to heat the panels and get them straight. The Land Raider Spartan is mostly big dumb blocks of resin, and any parts that may need straightened are smaller and more manageable. (Even before FW Fixed the treads!)

Storm eagles take too long to get you into combat and draw alot of attention from sicarans.

Safer bet is always the Spartan in my mind.


As said, its also a nightmare to assemble.
It actually took me less time to assemble a bloody reaver titan.


If you do want an aircraft though, look into the xiphon.
Points heavy but it does its job well and reliably destroys armour.
Also looks ace and is a dream to assemble lol.

It's a shame the storm eagle doesn't have the grav-chute rule. That would make it a lot easier to drop the payload.
