There are Firefox (and I'd assume Chrome) add ons that prevent animated gifs playing automatically. The one I use will start it playing on a mouseover and pause it on a click.

This has the benefit of working web-wide.

I've recently hid all signatures and avatars. I hate it, but some people's gak just use up too many of my pixels. Also, more incognito for work and gak.

What browser do you use? You can turn off .gifs and stuff from certain websites in your settings.

Ive got firefox 44.0.2.

In your profile, under "Display Settings," you can disable signatures and/or avatars, but it's a blanket setting - you can't just disable gifs.

You can also use the Mobile theme, which has essentially the same effect.
