Er, but Chaos does have tanks. Just because no one uses them, doesn't mean they don't exist. Besides, we don't know the actual rules, yet. I'd be surprised if MCs weren't included in the list of allowable units. No sense in alienating (get it?!) anyone.

Basically, from what the guy running it at my FLGS said, it will be a month-long campaign that starts with everyone buying a new model, or a start collecting box, at the starting day. Specifically, a Vehicle (of any kind, including fliers and super heavies) or in armies without vehicles, a MC. You spend the first day assembling and priming your models, and there's a painting contest for them shortly after. Then, a week or two later the first game happens, a 500 point mission on a 3x3 table using the model(s) you purchased + filler. At the start of each game, You roll on a 2d6 table for your vehicle, which gives it a buff. After the 500 game, there is a 750 game, then a 1000 point group game on a bigger table, and finally an 1850 game, which I believe is free-for-all. The set-up is meant to encourage the purchase of new models for your army, and to run it a store MUST buy both the $30 tank-shock package, and ~$1000 dollars in tanks, though the discount the store gets for buying in bulk is increased a good bit because of the fact that that much stock must be ordered to run the event.
Over-all, it sounds like a ton of fun, but how well it will work is still yet to be seen. I'll certainly be joining in, and might try to convince my little sister to do the same with her chaos.

What cash? The event sounds interesting but there wasn't really any information about what the event is.
The stores have to pay GW $1000 or $500 (depending on the pack) to run this event. Said payment gets them an additional discount on tank kits IIRC.
I'm not sure that rumour is true. I see at least two local small shops that I doubt will pay this upfront cost. Some don't even do xwing store championships. So $500-1000 makes no sense.

Nope, it's true. You have to buy a TON of stock, though their usual bulk savings is increased. If the stores where low on core stock, it's a no-brainer to try to do, but a lot of places don't have the space for that many new tanks.

Ya from what I'm told the kit is basically free but you have to buy stock with preset orders at a higher discount meaning they make more money for each sale of stock. Totally different then paying $500 for a cardboard kit.
How long have you played 40k? $500 of stock even with a 50%-60% discount is like 12x tanks. That's not a ton of stock.

cardboard kit costs $30 or so. The stock is apparently worth around ~$1000

It's 500 or 1000. Even with this increased discount at 50-60% off msrp that's 12x tanks. Not exactly ton of stock.

It's always cool to see new games come out from GW. The only issues I've noticed are how long they last. (Necromunda, Battlefleet, Blood bowl, etc). Also, all I have are demons and no tanks for my CSM #sadface

Its also a shame that combat vehicles are basically the weakest unit type in the game. That being said they might end up selling a lot of Knights along with the occasional Russ or Hammerhead. Who knows maybe somebody will dumb enough to buy something like a box of Killa Kanz..... who would be so bold and so foolish to do something like that?

Well, will Knights be an option? Do we know what the list of viable purchases are?
If super-heavy walkers, gargantuan creatures, etc... are it could be a mess... but if any army that can take pure vehicles MUST, then its more interesting. Can you buy them directly from a GW or independent shop?
Then no, I can basically guarantee you that you will not be able to run them. The point of this event is to generate sales--hence why it's tied to a stockist making a purchase of stock they normally don't have a large amount of.
