So in the past 5 or so years I was probably one of the most negative (if not THE most negative) critic of GW's various practices with 40k. However, their willingness to put out a FAQ again, Get Started sets that are actually good value with decent units, various boxed games with discounted miniatures and affordable prices, and slowly opening communications with the fanbase has been a drastic, and much welcomed, change for me.

Not to sound like one of those other yippidy hounds, but for the first time in 5 years I'm actually kinda proud of the fact that I play 40k again. Now I am very clear that this isn't an overnight issue and there's still plenty of things to clean up, namely various codexes, like Blood Angels (if I didn't mention this Martel would probably pop up ), CSM and that horrible abomination that is the Wraithknight. But babysteps. And it's actually getting me to recommend the game again.

Anyone else feel like this is a breath of fresh air?

It's a step in the right direction, yeah. But they still have a long way to go.

Yeah. Just goes to show what happens when the CEO isn't also the chairman. Tom Kirby almost ran the company into the ground.

A step in the right direction that could have never happened with Kirby who almost seemed hellbent on driving the company into the ground. Maybe an ex was a shareholder.

Steps in the right direction, but there is soooooooooooooooooo much work to do to fix 40k, I am not sure GW has both the talent and the will to do so.

Between the new video games being released, boardgames, starter packs, FAQ and the overall quality of the miniatures I'd say things are on the right path to a golden age of warhammer. Unfortunately GW has been walking the wrong direction for so long that they have a bunch of lost ground to catch up on.

Well.
Still to do:
Clean up te gigantic mess with the codices and the formations.
Beginning actually comunicating with fething FW, regarding what they are up to!
Bring WFB back.
Then I may forgive them that Kirby-esque crazyness.
We`ll see.....

Definite improvements in the last 6 months no doubt.
I just hope with 8th they tighten the ruleset some more and reduce some of the super powered stuff thats floating about.
I've always said 40k at its core is still a fun game and the fluff, models and play are great.
A few more improvements around rules interactions and balance and we're there!

I'll go with the steps in the right direction sentiment. I was doubtful about the whole FAQ request on FB, but they actually followed through, which is more than I gave them credit for. The content is...interesting, so I'm not going to shower them with praise any time soon because execution matters more than the idea anyways.

My biggest gripe will always be with general rules and balance, and I haven't seen any real waves on that front yet.

That said, if BFG gets re-released with 100% plastic, all will be forgiven. So I'm holding out some hope for the SG revival.

They at least seem to be trying, which I will give them credit for. But I think they need to do more, a lot more, to really "fix" anything. They still have the wrong mentality IMHO, in that they don't see an issue with letting some armies languish using super outdated rules and little or no updates, while repeatedly piling on Space Marine updates every other month or so just because. A part of me wants them to go the AOS route of having the rules for models be free online, that way they are freed from having to have a strict codex/campaign update cycle. They can put out a codex and then add models to supplement it as they need, without having to wait for the next supplement or codex to arrive. I even partially want them to use the "three ways to play" concept from AOS in 40k too, I think it could work a lot and really add to the narrative approach which AOS seems to really push. One of the things I like about AOS right now is that you can, quite literally, buy a new box of something, assemble it and then play it without having to really fit it in with specific points, which also has its place, don't get me wrong, but there's something really cool about being able to buy say a box of Assault Marines or a new tank and just use it the next game without trying to "fit" it into your army and playing with points/upgrades.

I heard if you say Martels name 3 times, he appears before you and hits you with a nerf Chainsword.

But yeah, this is nice. Let's see the codex ones now, since we are all impatient monkeys.

To those saying that there's still so much to fix, every journey begins with the first step. For the past few years I couldn't see GW turning themselves around, and there was a sullen sensation that maybe the fans would be the only thing that would carry on the game. With these changes, I can see GW completing the journey back to being the premier tabletop game in the market.

Or maybe the new CEO will pull his mask off and reveal he was Andy Chambers the whole time!

No one acknowledging that there's a lot to fix disagrees with the notion that small steps (or any steps) need to be taken at first. What concerns people is the quality of the those steps. Its all well and good they released a FAQ, but the FAQ should be all around excellent. From my limited skimming so far and reading responses, it seems the FAQ is a little lacking.

So while its good they did it, lets not get ahead ourselves. Remember that issuing a FAQ is pretty much an expectation in any game, not something we praise a company for.

GW has lots of good ideas, but they've had an equal amount of poor executions on those ideas.

I'll keep watching how they move with 40k, but most of my attention will be on how the SG division moves forward and the quality of those games. If they nail those, maybe I'll have hope that 40k can be a good game again.

Hopefully they're going to turn thing around. The FAQ is a god-send, even if there's some things in there that either make little sense, or else have completely murdered entire armies. (those poor, poor Dark Eldar...)

Still, until GW stops piling every conceivable buff & new fangled toy imaginable on Space Marines while leaving half of the other armies to simply rot, I won't be forgiving them much.

My Tzeentch Daemons are still nerfed to hell and can't function properly, and my CSM's not look like a turd dropped into a dumpster fire, but their rules are only 10-15 years out of date to boot.

I want to think that GW is improving, but their recent releases still look like poorly written moneygrabs that don't give a damn about balance and happily screw over large sections of the playerbase.

My currebt theory is fbat this will just be a cosmetic makeover to make us happy to be recieving more of the same gak.

Thats how i feel about the new flyers, honestly its because no one is running flyers anymore. which is not because they are not strong, its because there is no point, i can take cheap AP2 weapons which can pop armored units just as good if not better.

but that said, GW is doing a whole lot better.

To many unpainted models to count.

Not really personally.

The fact that they did the FAQ thing is great, and there's some good stuff, but it's also full of their usual garbage where we have lots of rulings that are contrary to what the rules actually say or are completely nonsensical/actively reinforce problem areas. It's great that they did the FAQ, but this is something that every other gaming company does as a matter of course, it's simply expected, and their rules usually don't require *40* pages of FAQ in the first place.

The Get Started sets are ok, but far from adequate given the scale and nature of the game, and, more to the point, the pricing only seems great because of how insane pricing has otherwise gotten in the last few years, the starter sets really just drag the cost of the contained units back to about where it was 7 or 8 years ago (accounting for inflation). The boxed sets are niche things, and despite ostensibly being self contained games, they end up being just cheaper model sources for 95% of people.

Baby steps are good, but *far* from addressing the major problems the game faces or the issues with the company as a whole. The rules are still a monstrous mess, the game still has major issues with deciding what it actually wants to be and is trying to cover really what 3 different scale games should do, power bloat is still beyond absurd (curtailed only slightly by the new FAQ), GW still puts seemingly lots of time and effort into putting out lots of ultimately garbage supplements while actively going out of their way to avoid things people have asked for for years (e.g. CSM Legion rules/codexes), and cost is still absolutely insane.

I am actually very pleased and do not feel like they changed much. As someone who plays more RAI (and apparently am now justified in interpreting GWs RAI) not much has actually changed for me.

There were a few surprises, but I actually like their rulings in 99% of those. A nice rebalancing overall. Here's hoping the "final draft" gets posted soon with few changes to this first draft.

Only way to avoid the cliff is to take a short term hit and lower prices, without that nothing will change.

And they've already said that's not on the cards.

Really really went into the right direction with that FAQ I find, especially with the Erratas. The clarifications I find I did not need, but the Cover for MC, the Jinking transports (can't emphasize how annoying it is to see Jinking Ghost Arks with Necrons shooting from it).

I think one thing GW should do is help share the logic behind their formations and list building tips. The more I play, the more I'm aware of the glaring imbalances, but they are not as glaring as one might imagine.
It's just that rather than being a game where each unit has a niche in terms of damage like many skirmish games, an army needs to be balanced to operate both in their own and the enemy's table half, and that it works better when a basic structure is scaled up rather than having mixed units.
