I love using allies in 40k. They add so much variety

My top 3 favortie combos are:

1. Tau / Dark angels (ravenwing)
2. Eldar/tau
3. Imperial Guard/ ad mech/ skiitari

Can be allies that you have or played against. Just what are your top 3 favorite combos. Feel free to get into specifics on units etc.

Grey Knights and Ultramarines, good ol fashion Centurion Star.

Before the FAQ, Ad Mech and Blood Angels was good too.

Tau \ Culexus.

I just got the Renegade set, but I have yet to use them as allies for my assassins (as knights) or as desperate allies for my Tau.

I will say though that rolling a 1 on 'one eye open' is comical in several situations. Especially when in CC or counterassaulting an ongoing combat. Had some breachers in CC with a swarmlord, got my Culexus within assault range, and rolled a 1 with it. (Actually it was with my nearby Mark'o, and every markerlight in my list. . .)

Imperial Guard / Any form of space marines.

I really like having my IG in my armies to provide cheap bodies to fill the table. My favorite way to run them is an allied detachment with 1 small command squad, a platoon with two seperate blobs (to hold objectives) and 1 50 man conscript blob with a commissar.

It brings joy to my heart to see my poor guardsmen die in droves so the space marines can steal the glory. That and when I lose I can blame the guardsmen and execute any survivors for dragging down the space marines.

True fluffy list.ivw done the same. Good tactics too.

I like guard with ravenwing - my guard fill out the objective taking and anti-infantry capacity (with usually around 150 cheap bodies and a few wyverns) and the ravenwing outflank to hit the enemy's backfield with grav and melta weapons. It's a match that really works well together as IG tend to struggle with heavily armoured enemies and with manoeuvrability

Eldar/Covens- Freakshow at its finest!
Eldar/Corsairs- Rerollable 2++ finally came to my army.
Covens/Necrons- Conclaves, Grotesqueries, and Copsethieves make for a Freakshow monster mash!

Honorable mention to Tau/Space Marines. Last edition's combo of Buffmander and Plasma Devs was a 36" board clearer.

Welcome to the Freakshow!

I love allies too, it allows you to build a list around a theme and opens up tons of conversion ideas
My Top 3:

1) Eldar/Dark Eldar - I run my own flavor of "Corsairs" that do not use FW rules.

2) Eldar/GKs - extra WC for my Farseer, Yes please! Fast CC units that also provide strong shooting (referring exclusively to DKs here), Yes, again! Both are Anti-Daemon so I converted up some "Eldar Knights"

3) Tau / Necrons - Nasty shooting, Durable & fast CC. So many Nightmare combos that I am surprised are not used more often

I will say that my favorite head-canon fluffy allies would have to be Necrons\Tyranids. Necrons pop the transports, Nids eat the soft flesh within. Nids consume the biomass and leave the planet, while the Necrons can go back to sleep.

Chaos Daemons and KDK have the perks of adding a grimore to a BFTBG chaos knight which is fun

Skittarii and legion of the damned a strange combo but it works for me, just as the opponant has moved into postion to total my vangaurd/rangers in pop 2-4 (10 or 5 man) damned troopers (using there own "codex") and they then precede to be a right pain for my enemys.

GK and SoB is my favorite combo hands down. The sisters provide relatively cheap +3 armor sisters to fill out the line of battle, with easy access to ample melta and the goodness that is excorcists.

GK plus IH allows me to build a nice armored column supported with things such as centurions, drop pods, specialized tanks etc that GK otherwise lack.

'Nids uber alles. And GK I guess . . . them too.

I once played Guard and marines (vanilla, using ultramarines doctrines) vs Guard and GK. Amazing match, i ended up winning by spamming a storm raven, and vendettas over the enemy lines. Surprisingly my opponent didn't deal with the by psy-cannons but using massed guard HWTs to shoot down flyers. Honestly an amazing match to play.

Chaos Marines and Daemons mixed is good because that's how they USED to be. It used to be one book that was split up. I fully accept that. I also accept IG with any SM chapter, as it's the imperium of man. But Orks and Necrons? Or Eldar and Tau? No. Those seem like allies to address the weaknesses of your chosen army, not allies that are designed to build the fluff into your game.*

*I would accept two unlikely allies like BA/Crons or Orks/Tau teaming up to fight Tyranids or Daemons, as that's a far more important (and dangerous) threat that needs to be addressed sooner.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

From a fluffy standpoint, I love Daemons and CSM

From a total fun standpoint, I like Tau and Orks. Who has all of the long range shooting? WE DO!

And then there's my Tyranid Knight conversion....good times.

Most of my armies don't actually use allies though. I do generally prefer to just work around with whatever the single army has to offer. Multiple detachments? Sure, but I don't know. It just feels right when your army only has models from their own codex
