Returning to 40k after getting into WM/H.
I'd really appreciate some help in creating a single that's fun to take to my LGS and won't get immediately destroyed by everything. I'm not very competitive, but I want to at least provide my opponent with a fun game. Here's what I have available:
Betrayal at Calth
- 30 Tactical Marines
- 5 terminators
- Dreadnought
10 Sternguard
2 Rhinos
2 Razorbacks with Lascannons
1 Land Raider
1 Hunter
1 Vindicator

ok so let's see
you have 3 tactical squads
4 transports
2 elites
1 dread
i'm thinking you could do 2 formations and a CAD
Armoured Strike Force
and
First Company Strike Force
CAD
Automatically Appended Next Post: Armoured Strike Column you'll need a Techmarine (proxy!) and then you can use the vindicator and predator and Hunter.
First Co Strike Force you can have Terminator Squad deepstriking, Sternguard squad in razorback and convert a tactical squad to be another sternguard squad in a rhino.
CAD you need an HQ
2 remaining tac squads in rhino/ razorback
Dreadnought in drop pod?

Alright so the last time I played 40k, there weren't Attachments and allies and whatnot, I think it was 4th/5th edition? I remember there was a lot of overwatch.
So at the risk of sounding really dumb...can you please explain what I need to get, and how to.......how to do. it all.

Alright, so I have a decent amount of disposable income, what would you suggest buying to flesh out the army?
Also it's looking like I can't avoid buying a codex again. I'm going to paint these as Imperial Fists, so should I get Sentinels of Terra? or just the basic Codex...

Land reaider could go in CAD Automatically Appended Next Post: Basic codex...can't go wrong keeping it simple to start.
It's enough that you now have to do Formations along with detachments.
Automatically Appended Next Post: ok
so what you need to take as an idea is:
Captain or Chaplain (this gives you access to demi-battle company option)
Another Predator
Techmarine

So the Betrayal at Calth box includes a Captain in Terminator Armor and a Chaplain, could I use those guys?

OK what are the tactical squads armed with?
In 7th Grav guns and Grav Cannons are the new top dogs. Followed by trusty melta.

Haven't assembled anything yet, wanted to get an army list together before I did. I'm going to stay away from grav guns so I can play 30k if I found a group for it.

There is a lot of free power in formations, but you are not compelled to use them. You are going to need the basic codex. If you are going to pick up a supplemental one, Angels of Death might be the better choice. It has 40k rules for the BaC stuff, some nice formations, and some IF specific stuff. I’m not sure if it 100% replaces the old SoT supplement, but it should have a nice chunk of stuff in it.
What flavor Land Raider do you have? How much of your stuff is built, and if so, what with. Of course, if you don’t bother with WYSWYG, you have a lot more flex.
Just spitballing a list here
CTDA captain - 140
5 terminators in a LRC - 425
10 sternguard in a rhino - 255
10 tacticals, ML/F, rhino - 195
5 tacs, plas/c-plas, TLLC razor - 170
5 tacs, plas/c-plas, TLLC razor - 170
Contemptor dread w/ kheres AsC - 185
Vindi w SS - 130
Hunter - 70
Should total 1,740. For an 1,850 list you have some points to upgrade/outfit your terminators and sternguard. It’s a little light on AV firepower. You might want to rustle up any spare HW marines into a dev squad. Might also be worth adding some melta to the sternguard, or swap in some to the tac squads.
As for what to add to your force, a lot depends on how you want to play. I would suggest sitting down with the codex and looking at formations. You are pretty close to a Gladius (or sternhammer). To field a battle demi-co you need a captain or chaplain, 3 tac squads, and an assault and dev pick. I know you can build that out of a BaC box, but picking up an actual assault/dev squad will give you more options. A 1st company TF is a good auxillery formation, and just needs 3 vet squads to field. You already have 2. One problem with formations is it makes it hard to just splash a unit into your list. So getting the Vindi/Hunter to the table requires a lot more overhead. One of the perks of the old style of listbuilding is that you can more easily bring a random selection of stuff.

ok if not going grav then i'd go full melta. Plasma is ok but not when you need to destroy a lot of vehicles. and guns that kill your own guys are never a good idea lol
2 Tac Squads in rhinos w/ melta to the max
Sternguard in razorback w/ combi-meltas
Chaplain w/ Terminator Assault Squad in Land Raider Crusader w/ multi-melta
Vindicator
Predator
Hunter
Try going UNBOUND!

Land Raider is the basic bitch one with Heavy Bolter and Lascannons.
Contemptor Dreadnought has the Multi-melta, but I could change it if I needed to
If I were going to buy some devastators (which I was considering anyways) are lascannons the best choice? seems like they would be...
other than that, tactical marines aren't assembled at all, neither are the sternguard

I’d recommend avoiding unbound. While technically a legal build, in practical terms is is strongly frowned upon.
I’d only go combi heavy on the sternguard if in a drop pod. Nothing says “blow me up in the backfield” like a paper tank full of a massive alpha strike unit. The only reason combi sternguard can justify their high point cost is the face that can be ensured to get that shot off at maximum affect via a pod.

understood, so drop pod purchase is a good idea then.
And i don't know what unbound means

7th added it as a new way to put armies together. Basically “take whatever you want” In theory the special rules you get from the restrictions of formations/detachments (Objective Secured troops, re-rolling warlord traits, etc) balance out with the flexibility. In practice, TFGs can just spam broken units and make a mockery of a the game. Not to say that there are not legitimate uses for an unbound list. They let you play wacky fun things that you might not otherwise be able to fit into a list. But be aware that there is a fairly strong stigma against it. I would never bring an unbound list blind to a pickup game, and most tournaments forbid them. YMMV, check with your local guys, etc.
Drop pods are good for a lot of things. I quite enjoy mine. They do however top my “most hated model to build/paint” list, so take them with a grain of salt. Love them on the table though. If you do go down that path, you probably want three, to go with a hybrid drop list. Although one just as a suicide/disruption drop can work as well.

I paint for a living, so not really bothered by anything. I'll probably end up picking up one for the sternguard and then seeing how I like it before committing. Thanks for all the help

Best way to go is just to do lots of "counts as" in games until you find a squad that works for you.
You're like me, more painting than gaming!
