As a limited deal, the opportunity cost is pretty limited - it's one guy running a machine that would otherwise sit idle. It's not like they're losing pops on any of their plastic production equipment by firing up the spin caster for another go...
You may very well be right. I'm actually surprised they still have the spin caster, as one would think they would try and liquidate it to free of assets on the financials.
You do realize they still have metal models available in the online store?
Of course I do, but I can tell you that those metals don't sell like crazy, so I would assume their stock would last for quite some time and then they would be removed.

They also use the same machines for Finecast - they said one of the cheif reasons they chose the material was because they could use their metal spin casters. Even then, spin casters are cheap compared to HIPS machines. One man garage operations can operate and maintain them, so keeping a spin caster or two operation isn't going to do much for their financials in any case.

Is made to order partially an excuse to give their metal machines a running every few weeks to stop them seizing up? I bet it is cheaper to pump out a few minis now and again then leave them inoperative for too long!

Old Chaos Dwarf Characters (FW doesn't have one for a fighty-lord) and some old Chaos Dwarf Bullcentaurs (I want them for BB).
My hobby skills suck so bad, I'm afraid to cut up my beautiful FW chaos dwarfs for conversions.
On ebay the old Chorfs are very expensive.
I plan to play at GW, so using other companies models isn't really an option.

As mentioned they're probably using the same machines with the Finecast Molds.
Or is finecast dead?
I know they're not using the word anymore and saying resin. Is it real resin or Finecast?

Finecast was often refered to as Finecrap, so I can see why GW would start calling it resin, even if it was still Finecrap.

It doesn't matter how many they sell, they still need a spin caster in order to produce them as well as the Finecast models. Nor are they models that have sat untouched in the pick bins for a decade or more. If a product sat that long untouched, it would have been scrapped and the metal reused for something that did sell.

That, I honestly didn't know. I thought Spin Casting equipment was much more of an investment in capital. Thanks for educating me!

On the scale of an individual working out of his garage, moving up from hand pours, the purchase of a spin caster is a significant investment in capital.
On the scale of a multi-million dollar corporation? Not so much.

It depends on the model.
For man-sized models that were designed and sculpted as a single piece, or two, the metal models have superior anatomy, integrity and flow. They are rightly superior to the parts with individual legs, torso, head and arms.
For vehicles, such as the old SM Landspeeder and various walkers, not so much. Those are better in plastic.

When I considered getting a spin caster for myself, it was in the $5,000 dollar range. A bit much for a hobby, but a small investment for a company.

And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. " - V
