From a day or so ago :

http://forum.strike-to-stun.net/viewtopic.php?t=5826

I started a thread on rpg.net asking if anyone had heard any rumours about a new edition of WFRP, as GW were apparently offering licences for the old Warhammer setting as well as AoS. With FFG's licences about to expire, I thought there might be some hints leaking out.

There were a few replies, most of them irrelevant, but one chap claimed to have heard that a licence had been awarded and an announcement would be forthcoming, but that was the only information he had.

Interesting if true, as they say!

Regards,

Robin

Following breaking news from Bell of Lost Souls, Games Workshop was seen shopping a number of their licenses during the Licensing Expo 2016 in Las Vegas. While there has been uncertainty whether the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay license was up for grabs (as it was not listed on their licenses), it seems that a deal has been struck outside the expo to acquire it.

It was just confirmed to us last night by GW’s licensing department that they are in the process of concluding a deal with a major European publisher for world-wide distribution rights to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. While no other details were shared, we can only speculate which major European RPG publishers may have acquired the rights.

Much like our prediction from a few years ago, Modiphius Entertainment seems the likeliest candidate. Following two very successful Kickstarter campaigns for Robert E. Howard’s Conan and Mutant Chronicles 3rd Edition, it would not be too far fetched, particularly since they seem to be gobbling up popular licenses left and right. This may mean that the next edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay won’t use a percentile system, likely adopting the company’s overwhelmingly popular 2d20 system. In addition, with several WFRP alumnus and Jay Little’s connections to GW from his time at Fantasy Flight Games as lead developer for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd edition, it would make for a great fit.

Another contender for the license could be Asmodée Group, a French publisher. This would not be too far fetched, given their recent merger with Fantasy Flight Games. Details on the merger can be found here. Despite Fantasy Flight Game’s press release regarding the licensing rights, is that they have continued success with the Warhammer lines, outside of the tabletop RPG version. In addition, their forums for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay were migrated over to Asmodee in the last 48 hours (which you can still visit here).

Speculation abounds, but we’re very excited to see the next version of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Despite the news, ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG – the world’s first Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay retroclone published under the Creative Commons Share-alike license – is here to stay. If you missed out on our successful Kickstarter, you can still pre-order the hardback over at CrowdOx.

Who do you think will acquire the license? Let us know what you think over at our Facebook page!

... This won't mean 9th edition or anything before that starts m'kay ?!

I haven't an inkling about the fiction supporting the new setting, but isn't AoS a bit bleak? It was described to me as a sort of post-apoc world but with iron age technology, and Chaos running rampant everywhere?

We've moved past that, and even at the start-up, it wasn't THAT bad. Your description matches closely the realm of Aqshy but other places, specially Chamon and Azyr, managed to retain a semblance of civilizaiton, Plus it had plenty of wildlife in most places. Even aqshy had lush forests and grassy plains... alongside floating islands.

In the current point of the timeline (60-80 years after the beginning) there's plenty of cities being established. Currently, AoS can be described as a mixing of post-apocalyptic world with plenty of dashes of colonialism, as cities are springing back. Hell, Excelsis has a population comparable to that of Paris!

Meanwhile, I'm excited about the prospect of a new Warhammer Fantasy RPG set in the "Old World".

I've little experience with Modiphius' "overwhelmingly popular 2d20 system" and little experience with Modiphius as a whole, other than to say that if they are the winner of the IP rights, this will be a Kickstarter campaign, it will be wildly successful and end up shipping way, way, WAY late!

I hope that it isn't anything like WHFRP 3E too though, so I guess this means I hope Asmodée isn't the holder of the rights now?

Isn't/didn't Mophidus do the Infinity rpg as well? How did that turn out or is it even out yet given the lack of mention above?

I want a new 40k rpg so bad. I liked the FFG stuff and will always have fond memories, but after a certain point the rules inconsistencies drove me nuts between all the cores. The total focus on playing humans only also made for a boring style of game after awhile. I wouldn't mind something a little quicker to play but with the same level of lethality.

I know 40k's biggest player base has IoM armies but there is a significant number of 40k players whi play xenos factions. So my hope is they let people play anything they want and work out the details themselves for the weird alliances.

Yep it is great fun and feels very Infinity with a lot of emphasis on hacking and non combat based solutions to stuff and the full range of weapons and ammo from the tt for when stuff goes south.

Also makes good reading if you just want a bit more fluff than CB bothers with.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis

Is it actually out yet in physical form or is that the massive delay that Alpharius was referring to? On the kickstarter page looking at the headers for the updates, it seems like Mophidius is still in the releasing appeasement pdf's and asking for patience phase.

Also this is whoever get's the new chance to knock something out of the park and have it turned into an army and canonized. I know DW existed before FFG but it was their rpg that really did the brunt of the work and who GW followed so consistently.

They did say they also wanted to sell the license for AoS. Do we have any news on that front?

No physical books out yet, I'm a backer waiting for the first wave of books sometime this year.

Nothing against Jay Little personally, but can we please leave the 3rd edition dead and buried?

Just update 2nd edition with new mechanics and give us more sourcebooks like the Tome of Corruption. Less tokens, more words.

Agreed, less of the gimmicky dice and tokens, I know it is FFG's schtick and fetish, but less of that in RPG's please!

I agree about leaving 3rd edition behind.

I'd love a return to the Old World, but I think AoS will have more to offer given the recent advancements of the story line...

It may lead to that eventually though. GW are evidently still economically interested in the Old World so there is still hope that GW will see sense and have a Bobby Ewing moment about the End Times.

If it is anything to do with AoS I will go no where near it.

I only played the first edition of WFRP although I am quite heavily invested in the 40K RPG's so with luck they may resurface as well.

Yes, and I already have WFRP 2nd ed. for Old World adventures. There's not much point in redoing something most fans already own.

The guys that are making it, rather. Still unreleased (apparently due in a significant part to CB). Just this week they've sent a "we're very sorry for being late" update and a $20 voucher on DrivethruRPG to the backers to make up a bit for it.

Their Conan game's going significantly faster, though (backer already got the core in pdf), and my experience with them on that one and Mutant Chronicles have been overwhemlingly positive so far. And the amount of stuff I've gotten out of the Mutant Chronicles KS for the amount I pledged is absolutely insane. I'm GMing a weekly MC game and I could just use their pre written campaigns for years before needing to pick anything else.

You mean apart from a new ruleset and potentially covering areas of the Old World that haven't yet been touched?

Did they cover cathay et al during the previous editions? I have serious doubts they'd do so if it wasn't the case prior.

I can't really see any company snapping up the rights to help sell 2nd hand books -- although one would love some form of compatibility with previous editions.

One wonders if a potential way to do it would be to release sourcebook/settings in different eras as well as places.

Say a "war of the Beard" era book or the 1st war against chaos.

Presumably freed from any studio imposed restraints it wouldn't be impossible for them to potentially map out previously unexplored or less well known areas : Lustria or Cathay or wherever.

Figure if it does happen we're in for at least 1 chaos supplement eh ?

Perhaps my dream for an Ulthuan source can still be realised.

I'd kill for a fantasy based (be it old world or AOS) RPG where we get to be a servant of any of the chaos gods. I'd love it.

While I'm sure that will happen again some time, this here thread is for the rumored upcoming version of a Warhammer Fantasy RPG.

No Tau, no Dark Eldar (maybe some Dark Elves, eventually?) - sorry!

While 'massive' might be a bit much of an overreaction on my part fueled by annoyance at yet another late KS, it is substantially late, and no way most of those sourcebooks see the light of (print) day for a long, long time.

Look at some of their past campaigns - how long until they were completely fulfilled?

How late did they end up being?

About...3 years or so late?

Still, who knows who actually won the rights?
