And again, how much additional support does a £45 boxed set require?

Lost patrol had what? 2? 3? additional things? I could see GoC get another addition of venoms and then how much more would it possibly need?

On one hand GW get criticised when they stop making games, then they do release ingesting games you can use your models in (and support them with additional things) and yet you still get people complaining if each thing is not perpetually supported.

I also don't understand this apparent "need" for these boxed games to have constant support. They've obviously been designed as stand alone games like most board games. Why do they all need constant attention?

*Edit* Ninja'd and the above point made far more eloquently than I did.

Because GW had a history of producing exceptionally well supported boxed games (now, admittedly 15-20 years ago). They set the expectation, not the consumers. Simply put, people want more out of their products when they purchase them. It's why game expansions, DLC etc. exist in all forms of gaming.

For something like Shadow Wars - if it's good enough people will build an entire table for it, buy specific models, etc...really get "stuck in" as the Brits like to say. If it's one box and done, people won't. People don't get into miniature wargaming for a 2-hour long board game.

No one expects Lost Patrol or small games like the Gorebloodmanglereapharvest thing to get substantial support, but larger games - the expectation has been set beforehand.

And games like WHQ and Blood Bowl are getting significant support... and people ARE whinging about games like that not getting support (despite the support they get)

Shadow patrol is probably going to give rules to every conceivable plastic set and then rules (for new releases and probably additional content) as we continue... yet people will still moan about lack of support

Shadow War is supposed to get a retail kit for local support, so I remain optimistic.
Actual new model releases like Blood Bowl would be great, but in my mind support means continuous releases, even if it just hobby articles or battle reports.
Basically anything that keeps the customer engaged and motivated.

Yup, like every other single game they have done. Release good ideas, but their ability to actually put some effort into making them full games and expanding on them is extremely minimal.

Silver Tower was good
Gorechosen pretty terrible unless you are screaming the names of the cards and smashing your fist down.
blood Bowl sufferes every single problem old blood bowl has as they just copied pasted it.
Gangs good idea, but 0 effort to really flush it out and their support will be nil after this WD extras added
Hammerhal vomit compared to Silver Tower, just a stop gap because people loved Silver Tower.
Shadespire, as its like gorechosen with different minis, see above.

Would be cool to see Shadow war be a good game, with a good campaign system, but 95% chance GW will copy paste necromunda rules, not fix anything or balance and promote it to death saying its all new and amazing!

I really hope this isn't the case and this is a 40K Skirmish ruleset that GW (and the community) runs with.
After the similarly (to the other games you've posted) lazy re-hash of Kill Team I'm not particularly optimistic though

While that does appear to be the case, the hope would be that eventually that site could become a good source for news, hobby info, etc.

The cost of shredding, melting, extruding, peletizing and then re-injecting probably outweighs new plastic. Companies only do that kind of thing for the 'green points'

Not to mention; isn't production dont outside the UK? I imagine the cot of logistics is way higher than materials, in which case recycling doubles the logistical cost cause now you've gotta send the stuff back and have it reshipped to you as product.

I don't think it's as simple as that. HIPS is some kind of weird combination of plastic in a semi-flexible medium, so it probably can't just be melted and poured into a fresh mould. Plus only a tiny fraction of the cost of miniatures is the material they are made from; cutting moulds, forming the plastic in them, shipping them from the factory to the warehouse and so on all probably outweigh the price of plastic many times over.

On the other hand, I do agree that 'shifting old models' is very unlikely as a major motivation for these new games. Despite people claiming this every time a game uses older models, I've seen no evidence of it. GW have never, as far as I know, put older kits into boxed games just before releasing a new kit, which is what you would expect if they did follow this practise. Many of the boxes games even use different coloured plastic, meaning the models had to be cast specifically for the game.

The cost-saving is in not designing and producing new model designs/moulds. Shooting new plastic into existing moulds is cheaper than a new design and mould. I sincerely doubt that all these Scouts and Orks were recalled and reboxed, for example. Nah. Bang some new HIPS into the moulds and bang out some cheap troops. Pence per unit, sell for pounds, sorted.

And they do recycle HIPS.

I dont doubt that they recycle materials at the company.... but I'd bet twenty dollars that they don't ship unsold models back to their factory to be shredded and turned into new models. If anything, scraps go into a bin and they pay some company to come cart them off.

Just an update, got this email from Miniature Market:

During GAMA this year, Games Workshop made a major announcement that they were lifting several restrictions in regards to online selling of their product. Starting in May 2017, online websites will be allowed to list products along with pictures and descriptions. Games Workshop products can now be bought and sold just like everything else listed on our website. There will be a M.A.P. (Minimum Advertised Price) associated with these products at 15% off of the SRP.

Over the next few weeks we are going to be stocking up and making room in our warehouse for more than 1,000 Games Workshop products. When the restriction is lifted, we will send out an email notifying everyone once the items are available for purchase. We will not be selling any Games Workshop products prior to that date. Be sure to sign up for our Games Workshop newsletter to be notified of product updates and news.

But wait: there’s more …..

In addition to carrying their products on our website, we also want to help build the Games Workshop community. From 2009 to 2011 our local retail shop in St Louis would frequently host Games Workshop events. There would often be 30 to 40 people in attendance. We plan to bring these events back to our retail storefront. The St Louis gaming community has been missing a reliable place to play and we hope to fill that void. To be notified of local Games Workshop events, please be sure to sign up for our Retail Store Events newsletter.

Finally, two years ago we created a section on our website called the Review Corner. We have more than 1,000 reviews from gamers and we plan to expand this section to include table top games. Games Workshop reviews and podcasts will be a major addition to the Review Corner in 2017.

Again remember that 15% off is the advertised price but sales can bring this price lower as well. Places like minature market also offer free shipping and thier purchase credit discount which is like 1%.

I Emailed them and asked them some questions revolving around other online retailers that offer 20% off as standard, with no cart, and how they intend to compete.

I will update with results of that EMail.

MM customer points and permanent sales could add up, but in the high priced world of GW....

I would rather have an extra 5% off than an online shopping cart.
