All 4 aspects come together nicely for me, they lead into each other.

First, I have loved immersing myself in fantastical worlds all my life. From day dreaming my own to reading Earthsea in primary school.
From there, being able to involve myself (outside my imagination) was amazing, plus I have always preferred strategy games (like to be able to give what I do some thought). So Warcraft 2 was THE BEST THING EVER (I was 8).
Table top offered even more interaction though, because we can personalise our armies and the models are items I can treasure, rather than a few pixles with stats.
As an added bonus, wargaming let me interact with and befriend other geeks and having some like minded friends is gold to a teenager.

Finally, I greatly enjoy the creative outlet. The bit of direction and purpose (i.e. not just being creative for the sake of it) gives me the start and motivation to actually create things. Which is something I doubt I would do (or have aquired the skills for) without an external reason.

Because if I can understand the mentality behind a genocidal inquisitor I can learn to have SOME empathy for people on the other side of the political spectrum.

Yep!!

Started playing in October 98 right after 3rd edition dropped, so technically 18 1/2 years but I got an ipad literally so we could share warhammer e-books hahaha.

He is working on horus heresy armies and I am working on my Black shield force.

It is also funny because for a long time I refused to play any imperial armies, i was Xenos Khorne all the way. Then the drop pod model came out and I was all in imperial. Now I HATE (assembling) the drop pod model after building nearly 30 over the years but I am ALL IN on imperial themed around an inquisition task force. Also Nurgle FW marines, not a single Xenos army.

Its funny how things change over time

I like setting up the stories for the tabletop and then watching them unspool before me into a conclusion.
