Hello everyone! I just bought my first three ultramarines models and finished painting them not long ago. I've long been a huge fan of the wh40k universe and enamored in many of the books. Some of my favorites are the ravenor and ultramarines omnibus'.

Sadly, I live in western Michigan and the nearest location I've found with an actually community of players is an hour away, so if anyone knows of groups of places round there I could watch some games and dip my toes in the water, I'd much appreciate hearing about them!

Now I've read a good bit of 40k books but there are a few questions I have I hope someone could answer. Am I missing some glaringly obvious 30k version of the game, which would be similar to the old world to age of sigmar change when 40k came around?

Also, how exactly is 40k moving forward. Again I feel like I'm probably just missing some books or what have you I haven't read. It seems to me that the imperium is slowly shrinking or at the least, not going to be able to fend off further xenos and heretical incursion without some major events like primarchs returning, etc. Hell the only time I can think of the tyranids being stopped was at macragge if I remember correctly.

Thanks for reading and replying! I'm quit excited to get into the fluff even more and begin playing the actual game.

Now here's some pics of my not so fantastically painted models attached

Hello and Welcome! Always good to see another Ultramarines player. To try to answer your question, 30k is the Horus Heresy rules put out by forgeworld. It is set in the ancient lore period of 40k and is a parallel game taking place in 40k's history. As far as the storyline advancing, for much of it's history, the fluff of 40k has always sort of hinted at a standoff between the factions with the imperium on the verge of collapse. Now the, various catastrophes that were merely hinted at before are actually occuring (cadia being destroyed, the eye of terror widening, etc.) as well as the return of characters from bygone eras (gullieman of the Ultramarines, Magnus) and the story seems to being moving beyond that standoff state.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Wait. My favorite primarch is awakening? Gullieman for the win!

Also, another question I should've already asked, where do I go from here? Far as I can tell I should observe a few games and decide if I want to get more models but.... I have no idea what ones to get. I know I'd definitely start an ultramarines army though. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks for the replies!

As far as models go, I would say you probably can't go wrong with a couple of tactical squad boxes and a hero of some sort. Captain, Chaplain, etc. I wouldn't buy a codex or anything as GW has announced that they will be dropping a new edition soon that will invalidate previous codices. Without knowing exactly what's coming, it's hard to say what units will be "good." so you can either go with the time-honored "i like this model so I will add it to my army" and risk having a neat, but useless unit or wait to see what units wind up being better than others.
