Wait for 8th in June. No point buying anything until then.

avoiding the lorax on Crion

Is that including the codex too?
No one knows what cdexs and rule books coming up so better to keep some aside for that.

Because it looks like. Smaller elite forces might be the route you will have to take.

Hoard might be too expensive.

I found that a Necron army can be done up for a decent value, compared to other armies. They have a smaller (ish) model count, and some of their models are worth a bunch more points-per-dollar than other armies, like Lychguard. Plus, some of the kits have two units in them, such as getting the Annihilation Barge also gets you an Overlord, and a Warrior Box also gets you some Scarabs.

HOWEVER, what with the new edition coming out for 40K and it will be a complete over-haul of all Codexes (Codices?), we don't know what the points values of ANY army will be once the new edition hits shelves this summer.

Waiting till 8th is certainly the safest way to go, but to get started now - which isn't totally unwise - you could pick a faction you like, and get the "start collecting!" box.

It will give you (a) the ability to play right now, and (b) they come with troops and an HQ, with one other thing, which will all be usable in 8th.

Do some digging and you can get them for half off on amazon or ebay. So you're looking at like $40 for about 400-500 points depending.

Vigo. Spain.

First, you need to pick a army that you like the look and, when 8th droops, as the rules will be free, just look how the armies that interest you play.

Then, if you have a limited budget, you should go to Ebay to try to catch the regular troops. They are abundant and very cheap in Ebay. Ork boyz, Tau Firewarriors, Hormagants, etc... on ebay you can buy squads of them with a 50-70% discount without problems.

Characters and the like tend to be too cheaper on ebay, but maybe you just want that one model, in that case, look for 3-party sellers, not GW direct, to have that nice 15-20% discount.

If you do that, 400$ can be like 900$ buying direct from GW.

EDIT: Wait, you have 400$ in store credit, not money... well, in that case, ignore all what I said, just the first sentence is valid!

There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

$400 is not a small budget. That'll get you a reasonable chunk for any army you want. You should pick one that means something to you. Either you like the look of the models, the background seems entertaining, or they have special rules that you like.

But as others said, go slow until 8th comes out in a couple months. No one knows what will happen and it would be a shame for you to buy an army you become disinterested in because their rules took a nose dive.

I'm from the future. The future of space

The new version of 40k has a lot of elements similar to the current post-general's handbook state of Age of Sigmar. That means it actually works quite well for smaller armies. So $400 should be more than sufficient with the new edition to give a great gaming experience.

At this point it's really hard to make calls rules wise. And since you'll be assembling/painting $400 worth of miniatures, they probably should be something you like the look of. I'd recommend looking at the Start Collecting boxes and see which models jump out at you.

Personally, I'd probably grab the Skitarii because the infantry look amazing and I really like how the Onager walker looks.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

As all others have said, find an army you like the look of & pick up the Start Collecting! box. It's a safe bet, as even with 8th dropping in 6-8wks, you will still need an HQ and at least one Troop. Maybe hold off on assembling any special/heavy weapon models until you have more information on the weapon rules, so you're not stuck with a weapon set that is less than optimal, but other than that, get the 'core' together and painted, that way you can hit the ground running when 8th hits.

Sometimes, the only truth people understand, comes from the barrel of a gun.

Most of the get started packs don't offer a choice on the heavy.

In regards to the specialist weapon, you're probably safe making anything but grav.

honestly I would wait to see what 8th brings... that said you can get. that said if you like elite armies and want to stay imperium the custodies are fun to play. talons boxes are 160 and have a land raider, rhino, sistes of silence and custodies plus a contempter dred.

You could get a decent Necron army going,

Necron Warrior Ark Phalanx $60
Start Collecting Necrons $85
Tomb blades $41.25
Immortals/Deathmarks $33 x2
lych guard/praetorians $33
Destroyers $50
Monolith $66

That will get you a 1800 point list and then some, while hitting all fo the staples of the necrons like a monolith, destroyers, two squads of warriors, some scarabs, etc. My suggestion would be very different if it were a 7th ed purchase, but with 8th around the corner I think you try to flesh out the force org chart to get larger amounts of command points. but as others have said it might be better to wait.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

So far it seems like Astra Militarum might be a force to be reckoned with, possibly Orks too.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Do you NEED for 7th? If so, Daemon tetrad: 4 princes, one of each god, $160. Can hit 1500pts with that. Grab a fifth, convert to Be'lakor, couple boxes of blue horrors and blue scribes and go crazy.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Daemons. The get started boxes and 1 or 2 other purchases can get you going under 400, depending on what codexes cost.

Example:
Tzeentch start collecting X2 is 170 dollars
Lord of change/Kairos Fateweaver 115
Blue horror box with brimstones 50

total comes to 335. That is a great start spot, with room leftover for generals handbook and codex. I am not sure how viable tzeentch will be come 8th, but daemons are good for both AoS and 40k, so its almost double the value.

Don't get anything, forget the hobby for awhile and take a break.

Really this is a hobby for personal entertainment/enjoyment, you should either be struggling to pick between things you like or already know what you want. If you just traded in an entire force and it 'hurt' doing so, and now you're wondering what to do with store credit.. I would just stop right there and then. There is a new eddition coming out in a couple of months, come back then with a fresh mind and see what takes your fancy, hopefully the new stuff will get you excited.

Wait for 8th and play with shadow war Armageddon in the mean time with the faction you will want to play. It will cost you ~30$ for a box of troops and perhaps an other 20-30 for an other box and the mini's will also be usable in your army.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Buying large quantities of models in one big gulp isn't something I would advice. Stick with buying that what you can paint.

Well the initial release of 8th looks like its going to b accompanied by DG and more space marines so no point in waiting for the starter or initial model releases. Tau are a good option, they have a better plastic range of models than the eldar (which needs more plastic aspect warriors, redone guardians which are showing their age etc). Daemons are a good option, have a lot of plastic models and they aren't excessively expensive because they don't rely on vehicles as much.

It honestly wouldn't hurt at all to wait a month or two to see what 8th brings, there may be some surprises in store.

I think im going to wait til 8th because it makes sense. but assuming its a lot like sigmar and I love sigmar, what would you guys think of a wraithguard army? with the store discount i can get the bundle that gives me a shadowseer a warlock and a farseer 20 wraith guard two wraith lords and a wraith knight. My friend plays tyranids thkugh i have no idea if i will never have a chance with an army like that.

Dark Eldar kabalite army is actually relatively cheap depending on whether you want lots of venoms/wracks included as they are the two units which burn through cash in large quantities.

Although, as others have said, probably best to wait for 8th to drop in June and see what the state of play is.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

With 400$, not counting books and painting stuff, you can easily buy a 1500-1850 army completely new on sprue. Considering standard kind of armies grey knights and necrons are the cheapest options.

We know what not might change when it drops and may invalidate your fluff or plan.

Plus I gives you time to think on exactly what your after.
Do you want elite, Imperial, xeno etc.

That can be decently competitive if you add wave serpents for the wraithguards. and it's fluffy. and it looks fething nice too.
And most of it isn't so competitive that it would get nerfed next edition, the Wraithlords and most Wraithguard are actually likely to get buffed.

Grey Knights would be easy to start for that much. 2 squads of termies maybe a land raider or attack toaster, and some dread Knights with the rest.
