I usually run 1 plane, 7 tanks and 100 dudes in 1850p games. Mostly with 3 Leman russes, 4 chimeras, 1 vendetta, a command squad and 2 platoons of 45dudes in each. Often with veterans or MT in the aeroplane. This is a very infantry/obsec foccused list though and was quite the project to build. I started it up back in 4th and I'm still adding stuff. You only really need some 20 dudes though if you wanna go super tank heavy.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

Thanks for all the great replies guys!!!

So I've picked up some stuff here and there. I got 2 squads of 10 man grens right now, about 40 infantry, 20 running, 20 gunning, 10 engineers, the command HQ squad and a alpha pattern Russ.

That should keep me more than busy for a while lol.

So what is the opinion on static arty vs stuff like the basilisk?

SM - Storm Giants
CSM - Crimson Slaughter
KDK - The Wrath

Basilisks don't move anyway, so you're saving 50 points ditching the tank chassis if you're going to be hiding behind an ADL with bubble wrap all game.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Static arti all the way. Not only does it look awesome and suit Death Korps and their style to a dime, it's also cheaper but just as effective, as you wouldn't be driving a basilisk around anyway.

EDIT: Basically what Inquisitor Lord Katherine said

However, if you're looking into the Medusae, I would recommend the tank-mounted Medusa. The tank chassis served me well in that regard, and towed Medusa is quite a bit more expensive than the towed Earthshaker compared to the SP Medusa and the Basilisk.

I'd definitely go with the towed gun over the SPG for the Earthshaker any day, though.

I started a Guard army in preparation for the new edition. It looks good enough so far to make me want to come back to playing.

Tallarn all the way! I have about 70 of them already (including Al'Rahem and the fat LT with Bolter) and just two Leman Russes on the way right now, hoping that Rough Riders survive the transition to 8th.

Nevermind, just saw Rough Riders have been mentioned in the Faction Focus posts. Truly excited now.

Read the article, and I'm so excited.

I just realized I haven't played my Guardsmen in a year.

Like others have said the basilisk isn't going to be moving so it's better to go with the artillery instead. Not only does a earth shaker cannon look cooler and fit the DKoK better but even with a full 8 man crew it's about 20 pts cheaper then the basilisk.

I'd recommend before you check out a 2nd hand online retailer to see what's good and cheap out there. For example Ebay is always a safe bet, but maybe your local area may have something better.
E.g. I'm Australian and we have this great site called Gumtree - local, cheap and 2nd hand.

Biggest obstacle of this game would have to be money, then time, then effort. Might as well knock all of them out.

Thanks for all the great help guys. So at this point in time I've accumulated a decent amount of stuff to start a guard army.

40 DKoK guardsmen, 20 running 20 firing.
20 DKoK Grenadiers
2x PCS
1x CCS
1x Sentinel
1x Rider (just to paint up for now, looks awesome)
1x Vanquisher equip DKoK Russ tank
3x heavy arty crew
3x Heavy carriage with earth shaker - found a deal online.
6x Stubber teams (because they were cheap and I love the way the heavy teams look)
3x thudd guns

So anyway, that's what I got for now. Thinking of the french blue great cloaks with camo green armor bits for paint. With arty pieces etc having lots of camo netting etc. Lots of mud and rusty razor wire as well.

So I'm gonna work on putting those together and then go from there. Definitely want more tanks with the different boom sticks, and flame tanks and transports. etc. But this is a lot of resin to work on for right now.

SM - Storm Giants
CSM - Crimson Slaughter
KDK - The Wrath
