Let us suppose that 8th drops, and GW gives us exactly what they seem to be hinting at:

A well balanced game which favors wave after wave of infantry and effectively SHUTS DOWN death stars.

Let us suppose, for the sake of argument, that they do the following:

1. Import the rule of one from Age of Sigmar.
2. Disallow ICs from joining other units.
3. Significantly nerf psychic powers.
4. Significantly nerf the weapons that are currently way too strong (e.g., grav weapons, scatter lasers, etc.).
5. Significantly weaken the durability of things that once relied on 3+ rerollable or better saves.

You get the idea.

Let's suppose that, when 8th edition drops, everything that is currently OP tier? Becomes complete trash.

Further, let's suppose that gimmicky, high points cost, low model count armies get seriously punished, and high model count, "horde" type armies get rewarded.

And let's suppose the best armies to run are Imperial Guard and Orks.

And for the giggles, let us assume that the most OP weapon in the game is the missile launcher.

How much are you going to change your armies?

I think overwelming amount of people here like the armies they play, and very few are waac players that chase the meta. It's not worth trying to bait an entire forum when you have the reputation you do.

Also- the 'gimmicky' 'low model count' armies are usually pretty bad (grey knights, harlequins, etc etc)

All of my armies are at least 4k at the moment and I tend to build them according to foc for every 3k or so.
Basically whatever happens I should be able to pick a decent 1500pt equivalent army with whatever I choose to play with for 6 months or so.
IF I enjoy the new system then I'll likely add some more stuff as I go and probably start a new army. If I don't then it's ebay time, GW are on their third and a bit strike now.

My Blood Angels and Eldar are going to have to probably change significantly to be how I like them in the new edition. My Skitarii I think are going to play on the strengths of the new rulesets quite well.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

I currently don't have an army, but when I finally get the money to make one, I will make whatever I want which will either be an undivided chaos army or an eldar army, whichever I decide. And I'll probably build my lists based on how I'm feeling that day or what models I recently painted. I'm not concerned about armies getting nerfed into oblivion

I'm starting fresh in 8Ed as I sold all my armies I played back in 5Ed.

But in your given scenarios, I'd generally stick w/ what army I had w/ some tweaks here or there.

But you should know the answer to this. It's 40k, full of codex creepers. Of course most would change their armies to fit whatever makes them most powerful.

I've already got three armies so I've got no real interest in buying a new one unless the design appeals to me on an "I MUST HAVE THEM! SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!! level.
As for lists, mine change daily anyway.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

What did you play in 5th?

CSM, Tau, Necrons, and Orks, all simultaneously.

I wish I had kept at least one army, but I needed to fund my jump into WHFB 8Ed Yeah, I didn't even quit b/c of the 6Ed trainwreck, I luckily avoided all of that lol. I believe I quit 40k right when Necrons finally got their update. I do miss the challenge of playing "old Necrons".

I play Tyranids and Dark Eldar. I haven't played 40k in about two years.

I won't change which armies I play but I will tweak them according to weapon or squad size options changing. I will also try out different units and see what what works and what doesn't.

All this will depend on the final rules plus 'battlescrolls', of course.

I play sisters, the most interesting decision i have is more flamers or more meltas? The hq thing doesn't really effect me since mine is locked in regardless of her rules.

Also waves of infantry is not a meta I would hope for. Horde armies are only slightly less arse to play against then deathstars. 'oh no it's fine that your movement phase takes half an hour, totally fine.'

I'm pondering a new army for funsies, I've got burning of propperio and betrayal at calth's minis both sitting unpainted so I'm tempted to paint em up as space wolves or something for the new edition just for a change from painting blue

What a well thought out and interesting discussion question you have thought of Tradito. I do believe this WELL BALANCED game that you speak of hypothetically will completely make swaths of armies trash while others will be OP.

Let me "for giggles" imagine a forum where I have control over your poll questions and options. I would instead have a single simple question.

Going into 8th Edition if your main army was the worst army period, would you still play it?

Y/N?

This could just be me reading into what GW is saying, but it seems to me like "waves of infantry" is the meta that GW is trying to push in 8th.

In like 2 or three of the sneak-peaks, they have basically said: "If you are a good general, put your units in waves."

everyone will chance their army radically when editions shake up what works and what doesn't in my experience.
If you don't agree with me just ask yourself how many of the following armies you have encountered in 7th.

Oldskool green tide ork armies -> 100 - 200 slugga boyz in blobz of 30 footslogging accross the field + a kustom force field mek and some fun things.

Bezerkers in rhino's spam

Grey knight paladin blob + rifle dread support

wave serpent spam eldar lists

Chaos flamer daemon spam

Count as blood angel armies using chapter marines as stand in.

Necron flyer spam.

I've been playing Dark Angels for about 20 years now and the last time I did a significant army-wide update was when the rules mandated that they only came in squads of 5 or 10.

I may paint up some extra Heavy and Special Weapons troopers so I can modify my Tactical Squad loadouts, but that'll be it.

If I successfully resisted adding any Grav to my army, I'll be fine with whatever 8th brings.

I'll be painting HH for the forseeable future after that who knows?

I also love all the polls to "prove" gw did it wrong only to see in the results that the GW answer is still the most commonly voted.

I've been playing Eldar since I started 12 years ago and I have no interest in changing armies. Only thing I may do is pick up some of the Dark Eldar models I've been eyeing over the years assuming Aeldari doesn't go away

I've been playing Eldar since before they were a TFG army.
Even if 8th completely flips their power level and makes Eldar the worst army (which it will not) I'll still play Eldar.
I may take different units in my army, but Bikes have been the core of every Eldar list I have ever played or will ever play since 4th ed.
I like them because they are cool, not just because they are good on the table.

The current codex felt like a reward to me for playing what I have always liked.
I'll feel even more rewarded if Shuricannon bikes become the new hotness over Scatter laser bikes as I have always liked the Shuricannon more and often played them over Scats in 7th.

I've also played Daemons since 5th ed and I have a variety of models, so I should have no issues transitioning into 8th.

I doubt BOTH of those armies will be "crap" and at least 1 of them has a good chance of having a really good build for 8th. I won't largely change my army, but I am likely to add to it if there is a unit that is good that I don't have or need more of.

I elected new army but mostly because I am already working on said new army, a custodies one. have 3 contempotor dreds, 4 custodes squads. hoping they bring some of the 30k stuff to 40k, love their grav tanks and jet bikes. The whole army just looks fantastic. though I plan to use them for a while good or not in 8th

Hmm, I guess I am being punished for using PAGK (am hoping every unit gets bolt as per all psycher rule) with space marine allies by this change. I will just have to make my current force work with slight tweaks.

My army is undergoing significant changes.

I knew when I first started 40k that my painting skills would be a suckfest, and that i'd be struggling to construct models properly, and build a wonky army that has problems. The plan was always to transition into Grey Knights when ready.

I've been building my Grey Knights list slowly over time, for some time.

1. Every unit has a custom, third party base. The larger units, like a nemesis dreadknight, have 10$ bases that look really nice.

2. Key units are magnetized. I'm doing this myself, and it's time consuming but rewarding. I am very careful when magnetizing, so things are perfect. I am using very strong rare earth magnets so i can paint over them, without losing any strength. You can't even see my magnets unless i point them out.

3. Each unit's pose is careful planned so the squads create a theme in how they stand, so they look good as a group.

4. Key HQs and other units have custom third party heads, with long hair (not games workshop) to make them look like classic Templars.

5. I use quite a few different paints on them. I have about 15 paints I use in total per model to achieve their scheme. (It's not that inventive of a scheme, but i'm still trying my best). I also buy new brushes frequently with ultra-fine tips. I still really struggle with eyes, specifically the black dot.

So, 8th edition is just ramping this process up. With land raiders being viable, and Grey Knight terminators actually looking like they might be solid units (especially if we get psybolt ammunition, and psychic powers as promised), i'm actually excited to paint them.

I did take a break to work on my Guilliman. Because that is a really, really nice model. The details are amazing and it deserved my best attempt.

Unfortunately (or fortunately? depending on how you view it?) my lady friend is moving in, and the apartment is in total disarray. My normal painting spot has been completely dismantled, and i'm relegated to a tiny space in front of my computer, making it pretty onerous to get any work done.

I'm actually switching to space marines (blood angels dreadnoughts were my first models but I dropped BA after a few months, and I got pumped when I saw the dreadnought profile) and tyranids (because I have to have two armies for some reason). Selling and trading a lot of stuff to make this happen, and I'm loving painting nids already.

I've got enough Orks to be able to adapt to the new edition without purchasing any new models but I would be willing to spend some cash if there's some new sculpts or new units. I change my list every game anyway so no doubt there will be lots of experimenting to do. With my new Ad Mech I've not been building toward anything in particular and have a reasonably diverse selection so I'm hoping not to have to make any big changes there either. If Ad Mech get some transports however, I'll be buying a few of those.
