Subject: What Would You Do In 8th If Your Army Became OP?
|

In another thread, I made the comment that if Eldar are neither average nor sub-average in 8th, I'll likely just continue my habit of not playing against eldar.
I then recommended that Eldar players proxy their armies as Dark Eldar if Eldar continue to be game-breakingly OP.
This has me thinking though.
Literally anything could happen in 8th. I've been joking about how OP my tactical marines with missile launchers are going to be.
But that could actually happen. If frag gets d6 hits and krak gets d6 damage, missile launchers easily could be one of the most powerful weapons in the game.
What if that happened?
Missile launchers aren't a good weapon right now. They aren't the worst. But they most certainly aren't good. What happens if missile launcher launcher spam becomes the new OP thing?
I already play missile launcher spam, even though it's not OP.
I do OK against casual lists. But the changes could easily make it so that missile launcher spam is the best thing in the game and nobody else can win against it.
Would I keep playing it? Would I switch out the missile launchers for something else?
I don't know.
Have you guys thought about this? Especially you "casual" players.
What would you do if, all of a sudden, your "casual" army becomes the 8th edition of scatter bikes and wraith knights?

It changes nothing since Tau haters hate all things Tau. Power level doesn't matter but it gives them just enough of a justification to say Tau should be removed from game.
So nothing.
If Tau are op again? Laugh and say I was wrong. If Tau are over-nerfed and weak? Tell everyone I told you so and then laugh. I collect Dark Eldar and Deathwatch right now too. Don't see me smashing my army to bits because they aren't top tier.

No, so, you are misunderstanding me.
I don't mean "your codex."
I mean the literal army that you are currently playing right now. The 1850 points of models that you currently field on the table.
What if literally THAT army became OP.
What would you do?

There is a difference between a OP army and OP lists..
Eldar as a whole are not OP neither are Tau, but it is possible to build an OP list.
The main thing is not to play against Competitive level list/people, if you are not at that level.
Myself I actually quite enjoy playing against the top tier lists at events here and there, as it is a major challenge.. I normally play Tyranids and generally paly hordey lists with out Twin Dev Flyrants, and a lot of these 'net lists' I have played against they are generally close games

Yes.
I mean, can you imagine this?
"You play kroot spam list? You WAAC TFG!"
"You run devil fish spam? I hate those lists!"
As far as we know, we could easily be hearing those things in 8th edition.
It's strange to think about, but it's not outside of the realm of possibility.
I run missile launchers and sternguard.
That could easily end up being a very strong combination in 8th.

Ok. 8th edition drops. And tomorrow, your hordey lists become unbeatable and everyone hates playing against them. Even the Eldar players are complaining about how OP your lists are.
What would you do?

Probably play that list still.. In a more competitive sense, dumb it down when playing with mates using and several other models I have.. Continue building my GSC army I started over the new year, maybe actually start working no the nib Dark Eldar army I have sitting in the cupboard for the past 4 years So in the end.. Nothing different.. The only change being I will be the one with the advantage at events.

Sisters of Battle are going to have to get entirely new rules for 8th.
It could easily happen that sisters of Battle are OP.
At this stage, almost anything is possible.

You forget that Games Workshop's idea of a huge overhaul for sisters is to rerelease the same codex from years ago with no changes other than arguably making it worse by now excluding Forge World models.

I collect an all Tallarn Guard army, if a mass of meat sticks with flashlights become OP, I really won't feel too bad. I hope that my opponents wouldn't be salty either, since it isn't like I waited until 8th dropped, saw a mass of bullet sponges are great and bought a whole bunch of Cadians on the spot. It has been a real labor of love and money to get this army together, and has not been built to be cheese.

What would you do?
Ill reign in the power level so its a fun match for both people...... as should anyone.
Its a game between two people, and I like having a gaming group that wants to play with me, so I make sure my lists aren't broken. Really basic concept, strange people cant grasp that. (not saying you, just in general)
The other day I wanted to play a strong list (actually ran a decurion ) so I told my friend to bring his cheesiest cheese.
He did and it was a fun game.
Had I not said anything I would have curbstomped him, and thats no fun for anyone.
In the other thread you were saying that you should just rock up to a store, put your army on the table and no matter the other army, it should be an even game so long as both generals are similar skill levels.
This isn't the case in 7th. It is an incredibly hard concept to pull off.
I hope its the case for 8th ed, I really do. But if it isn't and my army turns out to be broken, Ill do what I've always done in 7th and build the power level of my list close to my friends.
Appended:
Sorry, I misunderstood again. Look if one of the lists I play becomes OP immediately, I'd stop playing against friends and start looking to get into competitive stuff (have been looking at this anyway). But i wouldn't run it against something that wasn't that broken. I dont find it fun tabling or being tabled (unless its a super close game and were both close to being tabled for instance)
I suppose my case isn't normative, I have 7k of necrons, so I can field literally any idea I make up with them, as a result I've never run the same list twice.

It means you can tailor you power level pre-game and in-game based on your opponent. Up against fething Necrons? Or SMs? Killing Mode, No Mercy! Up against Sisters? Soft, little pats on the head.

I'll keep playing my Eldar. I've played Eldar since Rogue Trader and see no reason to stop. I've only encountered one person who actually refused to play against Eldar, and to be honest, he was not an overly enjoyable person to be around. No loss for me. All in all, despite the internet nerd rage over Eldar, I've never had issues getting in a game or opponents having a good time.

Depends on the army in question.
If my space marines become even more OP than Grav-spamming free transports? Probably shelving them even if I don't have the new OP elements.
If my Khorne Berserkers become OP? I am going to browbeat every single player I see and shamelessly rub my army's OP-ness in their face. It's been almost a decade since Berserkers were legitimately threatening, so this is a long time coming.
If my horde Nids become OP? I will devolve into "That Guy" and be proud of every minute of it. Because, again, it's a long time coming. I will revel in the obliteration of the curse that was Cruddace that was inflicted upon the hivemind for the past two editions and make it known far and wide, as I whip everyone into submission with my lashwhips to their asses.

Well, my Tyranid army would certainly take an interesting turn. Being forced to tone down a list seems like it would be more frustrating than running an underpowered one. But, I'd probably moderate my list so it was at least fun and interesting to play against and not a curbstomp.

Toning down can be, there has been times I wished my friends ran top teir armies so I could unleash my crons and not feel bad. But it is fun in its own right, allowing me to make fun and creative lists and try stuff out I never would if i was building as efficiently as possible.

Hah, needless to say, I won't be tailoring my army to whom I am fighting much. I am going to field every Tallarn model I can out of sheer spite due to how much of a pain it has been collecting them. I would rather take less vehicles than fewer infantry at this point. Plus, depending on how effective missile launchers are... I think my guys will do alright with 24 of them between two infantry platoon's against vehicles.

Same for me. I usually never field the same army composition twice.
To the guys basically saying "deal with it if my current army set up turns out OP" - well, that's just sad. I'd simply not play with you a lot if you're unable or, more precisely, unwilling to tone down your army to match mine.
