So I am restarting 40k and no longer have my old Blood Falcons. So I am starting another faction and draging a friend in at the same time (it's all 8th editions fault... Stupid fixing the balance issues)

Working on a budget here is what I am thinking to start with for 2 factions (me and a friend)

So I am thinking to get for Tau:
Getting Started box
Optimized Pathfinder box
Commander kit
Broadsides kit

For Eldar, if the Skyblade can be found)
Getting Started box
Dire Avengers Skyblade (if it can be found)
Howling Banshee's blister
Warp Spiders blister
Guardian kit

With out the Skyblade the Guardian are dropped...

Thoughts?

Wait a month and see how things settle for 8th first.

I want to but I also want to build and paint them. So far the rules seem streamlined and the balance seems there but we shall see

Wait for 8th you may not like the game it is, better to wait a month than potentially waste money.

I'd probably start with the Dire Avengers and maybe some Fire Warriors. You'll probably want some standard troops in a take-all-comers list. Just wait to do the Exarch and weapons options for now.

The goal is just to get started. Those things will be fleshed out as time goes on (another Tau Starter box, more Dire's etc).

This will be my friends first Wargame, just like it was mine so I don't want to overwhelm him too bad.

As for waiting. The current rules seem balanced and streamlined so I will take the chance. Besides at the very least we can play a modified campaign with the Power level system with a home brewed injury table

Nobody can really say good or not with the new devotion dropping soon. If you want to have some forces painted I'd just go for the starter boxes.

Valid. We shall see. With the game supposedly tested heavily by tournament going groups then I sense a decent balancing. Since I am starting fresh, any mistakes will be covered and it is one reason I am going for diversity in the selections

I'm in the same boat. I haven't played since they redacted my Squat army.
I want to wait until the new edition comes out but also want to be ready to hit the ground running.

Currently looking at starting a Salamander company.

Probably best to wait but would be safe to assume start collecting set or the boxed demi-company would still be a good way to go?

At the moment, all of those guys are under a NDA. Which pretty much means they can answer with phrases like: "Yeah, that army is going to be cool!" but cannot really give you any specifics about anything in the units.

If you read the Chaos faction focus. You can see Frankie actually was suffering from not being able to tell you that Khorne beserkers might be OP. And that item came out before we were told that all units have split fire. As a result, he says you will be using Havocs but doesn't really elude to why.

I would just get a starter set or two. They want every model to fit so the starter sets likely did not change or they would of taken them down.

I did get that sense. I feel like CC is going to be strong but things like overwatch and such will balance it all out.

Vigo. Spain.

Starter Set of Tau is a safe buy, now or in 8th. Crisis and Firewarriors are the core of the army, and probably they will make Firewarriors more powerfull.

Pathfinders maybe aren't so sure, but the box is good value and comes with a transport that if you want to field Firewarriors, you are gonna need. Both the Broadsides and the Commader are safe bets too. So personally I'll go aboard if you can't wait!

For Eldar I can't speak, sorry.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Based on what we know so far, Jetbikes may be a bit weaker in 8th now that vehicles get armour saves and more wounds. The Fire prism is anyone's guess but if it comes out like the Leman Russ with a Blast D6 gun then it may be a little underwhelming. You used to be able to get a starter set for Eldar with Dire Avengers, a Wave Serpent and possibly something else. If you can track down one of those, it might be a better option.

I think that you have some good ideas there re eldar. Might see if you can find some unpainted guardians and support batteries on eBay. There used to be a ton of dire avengers when I was looking some years ago tho simply don't know now. Might think about swooping hawks. I used to see a ton of those too and they are cool imo. Don't know a thing about tau.

Jet bikes will be more balanced then but likely get better saves with such

They already have a 3+ save which makes them as tough as space marines. I don't see them getting made any tougher.

Vehicles get armour saves now and more wounds (compared to hull points) which makes Scatter lasers far less efficient for anti-armour work. Also they now wound things like Marines on a 3+ rather than a 2+ and will also suffer a -1 to hit when moving since they are Heavy weapons and Relentless seems to be being abolished in 8th.

I am sure they will still be viable but I don't think they will be the auto-include that they were in 7th edition.

Relentless as its own rule seems to be going away, but we've seen on the Rhubrics that they are now giving units their own rules that equate to Relentless, so I wouldn't be so sure that Jetbikes and Bikes wont be able to move and shoot.

Wait for 8th? Or buy what looks cool. Start collecting and other value boxes are always solid but until we get full rules just buy whatever things look the coolest to you, they're in game value won't be known for at least a month and a half.

Buy what you like, if you don't plan on playing super competitive they will most likely b good for games.

My girlfriend and I are both new to the game, and I am playing Tau and she is going to play Eldar. She really wants a wraithknight so she is getting that and a farseer and a box of guardians.

From the research I have done and from the questions I have asked for buying Eldar right now most people are saying a Farseer is a solid HQ that should still hold value and that jetbikes have always been a solid choice, so it would be tough to go wrong with that sort of stuff.

Use my list if you want to start. Have her skip the starter box and build up to a WraithKnight with Guard and a lord as her Elite and such. The Guardians or Dire Avengers are a must becuase of troops though.
