Subject: How much Sector Mechanicus terrain would I need for 40k (alternative suggestions welcome!)

I'm considering getting some 40k terrain so I can play at home - I don't have much really.. a wood and a hill and some craters I think left from when I used to play fantasy.
I love the Sector Mechanicus stuff but it's fairly expensive... how much would I need to provide a reasonable amount for a 40k board? Would 2 kits (I was thinking Galvanic Magnavent and Ferratonic Incinerator), plus some of the armoured containers give me enough? Or perhaps I'd be better off buying the imperial sector instead and going for ruins?
Open to other suggestions as I know GW is quite expensive... I did find the Mantic Industrial stuff which seemed a good alternative but it's out of stock everywhere. I don't love the MDF stuff, so would prefer plastic ideally...
Thanks all!

Good question. I like that new terrain too though expensive was considering one or two kits. Some of the expensive ones seem biggish on the box covers but for an6*4 table I would imagine nine various kits ... Lately I am looking at the new mausoleum box too. That kits can be broken up into scattered fencing and los blockers and seems a good enough deal.

I would go with some buildings/ruins as I think they work better with 40k. You won't need as many elevated walkways in 40k, unlike SWA/KT where you are building towards a skirmish. The buildings provide sufficient cover while filling up larger areas on a box by box basis. It would get expensive if you tried to fill a 6x4 table with Sector Mechanicus terrain... It's not exactly cheap filling a 3x3 or 4x4 board with it either.
Buy some GW scenery, then check online for other options to fill up the board. There are plenty of plastic options covering a wide range of LOS blockers (boxes/containers, rocks, hills, etc.) available on Amazon/Ebay, some of which can be found at less than half the price of GW's options.
I have been searching for Battlegrounds scenery to use for SW:A, but I may just bite the bullet and pick up some of the Sector sets.

Thanks for the replies. I'll take a look at some ruins instead then! As much as a like the sector stuff it's not worth spending a fortune for the number of games I'll play at home! May see if I can work one in as a centrepiece at some point though.
Leaves me more money to spend on my new army anyway

Might I suggest EBay or um... other means, of getting models for cheap?

If you absolutely have to buy terrain, buy ruins instead. It can be from GW, but Pegasus Hobbies has some interesting kits as well, and they can be expanded upon with a building per month (two months, three months, depending on income). The same goes for a bunch of companies that produce MDF buildings, and you might want to checks out a company called Amera in the uk for vacuformed plastic terrain. They have a bunch of large kits to swiftly fill a table.
The Sector Mechanicus terrain looks great, but it is a bit limited in scope; walkways and machinery. One idea might be to combine them. Get one or two Sector Mechanicus kits, then surround them with Manufactorum ruins kits. This combines your question about Sector Mechanicus terrain with the suggestions you were given, and your conclusion about more money to spend on the army.
Otherwise, google for "wargame terrain from scratch", or find Commisar Gamza and his scratch built terrain on youtube. Lots of tutorials and examples, and some of it, even when made from household waste products, looks great.

eBay can be hit and miss I find... can't always find when I'm looking for. there's plenty of gaming stores with discount on gw stuff though so between them will get stuff as cheap as I can!

Functionally, terrain doesn't really do much in the new 40k.
1-2 sets of craters are enough to provide the level of impact the rules assume terrain should have on the game.

Thanks for the tips. I haven't come across Amera before so will check them out.

Imperial sector is a great way to flesh out a table early on, having two imperial sectors eventually is even better. You don't want massively open areas in 40k as it just becomes gunline verse gunline.
