We lost TONS of named units. I think someone counted and got up to around 50. Pretty much any named character or other unique named unit from a supplement, campaign book, datasheet or White Dwarf article is just gone. Maybe they'll come back... probably they won't. I feel sorry for anyone who built an army around these named characters/units.
Pretty much any Datasheet where you can't find a box on the shelf with that Datasheet's name is gone.
There is no box called "Looted Wagon" or "Grukk Face-Rippa".

Wasn't Grukk just a Warboss with a special power klaw and FNP? Just equip a Warboss like he was in 7th and make it your Warlord. There is a Warlord trait that allows you to ignore wounds on a 6. I guess the klaw you will just have to deal with.
In other news, a lot of the special characters from the boxed sets didn't get updated. Captain Karlaen from the Deathstorm box didn't, not did the Spawn of Cryptus. Krom was updated because he had rules in another book, whereas Karlaen and Grukk did not. Watch Captain Artemis from Death Masque was updated, but none of the other unique characters from the Deathwatch faction were, so there was a trade-off.

Considering that the Indexes are just stop-gap books to get everyone through until proper codexes start releasing, I'm sure Grukk will be back once there's a proper ork codex.
Well this sucks, I am just about to finish painting the dude (and it is a great model). I am still very new to the game (startet in january) so this is my only "hero" character. Not that I built my army around him but I am going to name the squig after a friende

Hmm offcourse if they are planing to relase propper codexes then that would be great. But I just find it strange that a Boss who has his own box is not included.

This does kind of highlight the stopgap nature of indexes. I'm hoping for much more flavorful content from the actual codexes - perhaps they could actually add some more character to Grukk's rules, rather than have him be a generic warboss with a few quality of life improvements.
yea, it seems a lot of namesd are missing especially the starter set characters all of whom were fairly new and not much differ than a normal hq with the same gear.
i have grukk, and a the dark vengeance starter set named (4 of each really) and they can be slotted to the same role. you could even use their name but they are functionally just warbosses, sorcerors, champions etc.
I am sure we will get rules with he codexes and maybe they will do data slates like AOS for charaters they sell (i hope anyway)

Especially when they included rules for the 30th anniversary Space Marine model.

space marines and the imperium armies getting absolutely everything should surprise exactly nobody

Except that they didn't get everything so whatever.
I get the feeling Grukk might be gone for good, since his model looks like it might be replacing the finecast Warboss (which is ancient).

what are they missing? it appears they got rules for everything currently sold on the gw store as well as a lot of legacy support. They don't have chapter rules yet for space marines but that will likely be in the codex (I have an iron hands army but no real special characters so they are vanilla marines for now) the same way ork shave clan rules that are not in the game yet.

This is my expectation. If they keep that model as Grukk, they'll need to make a new plastic Warboss model. I don't see that happening.

I listed some of the things missing in my first post in this thread. Also Cassor the Damned is gone. The Chapter Master unit is gone. The Death Company Chaplain is gone. I am not even talking about Chapter Tactics yet. And Grukk's rules were only in a single boxed set. Chapter Masters were in the CODEX as we're Death Company Chaplains (only in the Red Thirst Edition though).

GW's stance seems to be that they will provide rules for every model you own and can still buy, but that those rules might be watered down, generic versions.
You don't get Grukk Face-Rippa. You get a Warboss.
You don't get a Chapter Master. You get a Captain.
You don't get Cassor the Damned. You get a Death Company Dread.
etc, etc...
This list would be about 50+ units long if I kept going. There are quite a few named units that don't have unique rules in 8th Edition. This impacts almost every faction.

I am not finding any of those specifically for sale today in the GW store. the only thing we were promised was that current units for sale will get rules. this promise seems to have been kept for space marines. they did some legacy support but not every unit. orks literally have units for sale without rules so promise broken there

The only one that confuses me is Ku'gath, but I imagine he's getting something akin to Skarbrand and Fateweaver soon.

Yeah, I can't believe that GW didn't give us rules for the Goff Rockers.
Honestly it's more surprising that they gave us rules for units that don't have models, like any of the bike characters.

Space Marine Commander. Where are its rules? Space Marine Masters of the Chapter, their rules are where? BTW, several Chapters refer to their Chapter Master as Commander. And that still doesn't do anything for the Masters of the Chapter.
isn't a chapter master an upgrade for a captain? I know for vanilla marines it was. granted it gave an orbital bombardment which I am not finding, but again I do not see a chapter master model. I am fairly certain space marines will get one of the first, likely the first codexes. i think claiming commander means chapter master is a stretch but i guess feel as oppressed as you have to.

I literally just listed the name of the Chapter Master model. But whatever. Oh how hard the Orks have it. They have to use generic stats for a Warboss. How ever will they survive this tragedy? How long before someone buys the film rights to this?

Deathwatch Overkill is currently for sale and has rules for units that are not in the 8th Edition Index books. All of the models/units in that box have 7th Edition datasheets and are all named, unique units.
That's another failed promise. It's not just Orks. It's Deathwatch and Genestealer Cults also. There might be others I'm missing.

i am missing where commander means chapter master and nto captain, I am not seeing reference to it. in fact i see where the only commander says the most
"Within the White Scars Chapter only the mightiest warriors and greatest tacticians rise to trusted command positions. These are the warriors who have shown fearless bravery, coupled with sound judgment under the most trying of circumstances - heroic leaders who can put aside doubt and fear and act swiftly and decisively. Only the best can lead the White Scars into battle, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
This set contains one White Scars Commander. Model supplied with a 40K Bike Base.
"
seems to indicate multiple commanders exist so that would be captains

deathwatch is its own game though. just like burning of prospero and betrayal at calth both of which also do not have complete rules for those game characters. (though they all get rules) not quite the same as a model sold for compatibility with 40k

You'll be fine here. Go ahead and finish him and for now use him as a "Warboss". He's still your hero type character for the army. When the ork codex for 8th comes out he may return as a special character. Worst case scenario: you have a nice looking warboss you painted yourself.
