The unit must still stay in coherency at all times.
So the situation shown literally cannot happen within the rules. Red team remains strung along in a line and only a few of them can fight.
Could someone explain why picture 2 is illegal? I thought in picture one you declear a charge vs the north unit. Between picture 1 and 2 you are forged to pile inn against the closest enemy model. I thought piling in against the closest eneny model ignored unit coherency, as long as you do not ignore unit coherency during the charge?

No move ignores coherency.
So if your pile-in or consolidate will break coherency (or will not allow a unit that is already out of coherency to return to coherency), then that move cannot be made.

So if no move can ignore coherenecy, and I am requiered to move to the closest enemy model, witch one of those rules override the other?
It does not state anywhere that unit coherency is more important then to follow the other rules? As far as I know the pile in move is mandatory, not optional?
As far as I know no other mandatory rule in the rulebook is ignored?

Neither rule is ignored. So in order to make a pile-in/consolidation move you must be able to BOTH move the model closer to the nearest enemy model AND ALSO maintain unit coherency.
If you can't do both, then you can't make the move.
And yes, both consolidation and pile-in moves are 100% optional.

You are right, it is optional. I thought it was mandatory, forcing you to follow one rule and break one rule no matter what you didi.
I guess this means multi charging just got a whole lot more dificult.

8th edition is the only rules we have been quoting in this thread.
As 8th is the current edition YMDC assumes all questiins are about the current edition unless otherwise specified(yes, that means you could ask about 3rd edition situations; just not sure how many of us will still have the books or remember those rules)

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Of course, this is only for 8th! A unit cannot move in the movement phase, except to fall back, if it starts within 1" of an enemy unit.
