So just prior to 8th coming out I'd been thinking if trying 40K again and doing space marines - but with new primaries marines are big standard marines now obsolete?

Nope. So far primaris marines do what standard marines do... except they aren't as good at it.

Regular Space Marines and Primaris Marines occupy different roles on the battlefield that don't invalidade each other. Although Primaris Marines are currently being rolled out, regular Marines are not being replaced or made obsolete.

Regular marines pretty much legacy army, like those at aos. Still valid, but will not get any update and will be replaced by the new truescale ones.

I will not argue about that, it's just plain obvious. Well, maybe old marines will get something like usual limited captain... oh wait, the new limited captain is also primaris now xD Oh my...

course it is, they're the new type of Marine, I expect them to get the Lion's share of the attention. it does NOT follow that normal marines will be ignored etc. never to see a codex again. but Primaris Marines are the new type of space Marine. designed to allow them to well.. make new Marine kits for a line that was otherwise somewhat full.

I mean, let's pretend Primaris Marines never happened, and 8th edition has come and it's time for space marines to get their codex... what new stuff could be added to it? I can't really think of much beyond some strange esertotic stuff.

Ofc oldmarines always will be in the codex, even the sisters still has their own. But the new kits, even the chaos ones, will be in new true scale. You will newer get updated little bikes, or landspeeder with all weapons on sprue, or nicely fitting droppod, etc. primaris will have owl model line now.

And? The Space Marine line is already well fleshed out. The only thing I really want released for regular marines is a new biker kit because the current one is kind of lame.

It's obvious insofar that it has absolutely no evidence backing it up...

I wouldn't mind a new Terminator kit. The current one is old as sin.

Forgeworld has a Space Marine Bike kit.
The GW bike is something like a Harley.
The FW bike is like a futuristic Superbike.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Bikers, basic Terminators and maybe Scouts.

Update those 3 kits and you can not touch the Space Marine Range in 10 years.

There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

well we have what 2? 3? no wait 4 (dread, ven dred, ironclad, cataphracti) seperate dread boxes. 3 seperate boxes for tac marines 4 types of terminators. without Primaris Marines being introduced I don't wanna know what kinda silly unnesscary thing GW would have felt obliged to give space marines for the new edition.

Droppods, Landspeeders, the 3 Dreads and the SPace Wolves Infantry all look very good even today. I agree with the Finecast Characters but as I just don't like normally special characters they aren't a priority for me.

I'll prefer for GW to make again the customizable generic HQ of old. The new Space Marine Captain is good, but the old one where you could customice him, like the old Ork Warboss or Empire General are just much better.
This game is about making YOUR dudes, not the generic pre-defined one GW sells you.

Hm, how about update those things? I guess that could be nice. The new marine players usually got confused when they open this old boxes and compare them to the new stuff.

Also we got an offtopic here, the question was will the primaris take all attention and be the new space marine standart. The answer is pretty much obvious.

So far GW seem to have done a good job of making the Primaris units similar but different to there existing SM equivalents. Of course this could change as more of the range is released. But at the moment the Primaris are less of an upgrade and more of an alternate option.

As someone who watch them (starter ones) on the same table with dwarf ones, may conclude, that they do not fit to each other aesthetically. They are like from different boardgames. They are too similar in design to be the "different", but too big and detailed compare to old ones. Eng is not my native, so it is hard to explain, but overall this was just akward for me (owner of the smaller wolves) when our marines meet each other.

I'm just making the advice to those, who want to start sm from scratch, better pick primaris.
Old marines will not receive updates and are outdated aesthetically.

To call Uber-Marines an alternative option is just sales speak in order to fool the customer. In a few years they will populate the stores in a fashion like the regular marines do now. This means total replacement. You will still be able to use regular marines in 40K with Legacy rules like you can field Tomb Kings & Bretonnians in AoS. Just don´t expect any updates or new models for your regular marines. I don´t understand why people have still doubts about it. The writing is all over the wall. It reminds me of past discussions like the notion of blowing up the Old World or the sigmarization of 40K. People just wouldn´t believe that GW will do so. There will be a rude awakening for sure.

Primaris will undoubtedly replace normal marines. It'll be a slow burn (maybe 5 years or more), but the die is cast.
