I currently collect orks, mostly because I had some fun ideas for looted machines and conversions, and Orks seemed the best place for that!

However the "messy" design of ork machines, while fun, has made me want to make a change and start a second army.

I'm tempted by Eldar, as I already have a couple pieces for it, but I would want to run a wraithlord/wraithguard list, which is both expensive and, I believe, not very competitive these days.

ALso tempted by Admech, as they seem to be pretty competitive in their machines, and maybe has a bit more room for conversion work...

Just wondered if there were any opinions out there, pros and cons and such?

I would recommend AdMech as, while they have a clean aesthetic, it's still very forgiving for just kitbashing and gluing stuff on for conversions. Eldar, by contrast, have a very unique style, making converting for them rather hard unless you're good with putty and bending plasticards (or you go exodite, but they have a different set of issues due to having to source parts from multiple different, expensive kits).

In addition, if you can find one of the 2016 Battleforces, you can get all of the AdMech Units on the cheap by combining that with a Start Collecting box, as well as being able to repurpose other imperial vehicles for use in your army (kinda funny how the Admech, ones with strident rules for how their machines are to be used, are better vehicle looters than the Orks).

Admech has the advantage of being an entirely new model line while some of the eldar line is ancient. Well... I'm not sure how old the tech priest and servitor models are but that's the only older thing. Though I'm not sure if the vehicles of the eldar are old, I think most of those kits are relatively new or had recent updates, for a given value of new/recent.

It's also implied the ad mech codex is going to be out soon after DG, alongside IG. Not sure if that's a point for or against starting them now.

Also, if you mostly like vehicles, admech might not be a good fit weirdly. It's only got 3 vehicles from two kits currently. FW will have more options out soon by all accounts but is FW with all that implies (including the relative value of soon).

I would go with Eldar, they're solid. Wraithguard in wave serpents isn't bad.

Of the two, I'd recommend running AdMech right now. They're in a fairly good place, the models are new, and they have a nice variety of stuff so that you can run them in a style you want.

Eldar tactics tend to be more rigid or require a lot of specificity with regards to lists.

Admech! One of the coolest looking armies around.

I started off with Orks as well and they remain my main army and a great love, if a bit disappointing rules-wise. I started collecting Ad Mech a few months ago and they are fantastic fun and an excellent contrast to Orks. A completely different playstyle and aesthetic, very different thematically and opens up huge possibilities for allies and expanded forces. Would totally recommend them to an Ork player looking for a new army.

I would recommend Eldar. They are really fun to play, and you can always branch into clowns and deldar. Wraithguard and guardians in serpents are solid. And they are fairly easy to paint.

One thing I'm liking about admech, is that I would be tempted to run the Admech force with some conversions... such as grots riding the DuneWalker, and such. Would mean I could easily run them as either ork deff dreads, or as actual admech.

Might work...

The Techpriest Enginseer was recently re-made in plastic. The old one is still available though, so dunno if that counts or not. The Servitors are from at least 3rd edition, if not older.
