Yaho,
In my study of lasercutter-fu i've learned how to use inkscape to an adequate level. As such i've come to the realisation that it would be possible to play 2 dimensional 40k using to-scale top down 'plots' of units and their position. What it would it would need is:
1. A number of to-scale cirlces with the units represented on them - probably by name, possibly by top-down photographs, or silhouettes of non-based models, e.g. Leman Russ
2. A scattering of interestingly shaped terrain outlines
3. An interested opponent who knows how to move shapes around on an Scalable Vector Graphic using the built or provided rulers
1&2 I can do, 3 is what i'm asking for here.
So, if you want to try against the following as a proof of concept on a 2x4" map, post your 30 power level list here. We might even be able to play the game in the thread if it works
My list would be:
( Index SM - Soul Drinkers)
Librarian with Plasma Pistol
2 x 10 tactical marines with plasma gun, multi melta and PFist Sgt
1 x 10 scout squad with sniper rifles
1 Venerable Dreadnought with TLascannnon

There is actually an online tool for this already... I've forgotten the name offhand but I'll edit this if I can find it. But it's basically a tabletop wargaming app, where you can plug in all the details for different units and then you can move etc ...
Kind of like the online dungeons and dragons app, but for tabletop games. I'll look for the name. I had it a couple years ago but never had a game with it, as I had no time to learn to use it and noone to play against haha. I'd be interested though, if only to run some test games and practise the rules prior to playing proper games IRL
edit: The app is called Vassal40k.

Hell, I have been thinking about the feasibility of gaming with a couple out of town friends over Google Hangouts. As I own most of the minis when we play, I could set up a table and then just suspend a webcam directly over the board so it basically looks like a Vassal game, and then my buddy would just tell me where to move his army, and then tell me what he rolls.
It'd be clunky, but would be the closest thing to gaming in person, as we can chat in real time.

Thanks for that; totally up for it if/when I can get my head around the setup.

Same here. I'd even be up for a different way of doing it if you wanted, it'd be nice to come up with something and actually get some practise on the rules.
