Howdy Dakka. The title says it all. I'm just wondering what units (if any) have surprised you in this edition so far.
For me, it has to be my Primaris Inceptor squad. It's just a 3 man squad with the basic load-out, and I initially only included them because I needed to round out my 1000pt tournament army and didn't have the points for what I really wanted, but wow have they performed. They've outright won me two games, snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in another, and have been surprisingly effective every time I've deployed them. So what about you? What units have surprised you so far?
|
Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

"Kids these days...
... I invented the 6th Ed meta back in 3rd ed.
Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..." |

Inceptors have let me down in every game I've fielded them, they're laughably easy to wipe off the board. If they had an extra wound I'd consider giving them another spin, as I love the model and concept. Finally, like every other Primaris unit aside from the Captain, they have no Invuln save in a game where Plasma is king.
My MVP has been my Krieg Deathrider Commander - tough against S4 weapons, invuln save, his demolition charge has swung battles, ties up units, can lay damage on with his lance, and can order fellow riders, all for 45pts. Love that guy!

Ultramarine assault centurions. 3 of 'em. Obliterating genestealers with hurricane bolters and flamers (also great in overwatch). And the ability to fall back and still fire when there is a bunch of genestealers closeby is awesome.

Pleasantly surprised:
Badrukk - thought he's useless but in fact he's mediocre which is leagues ahead of my pre-assumption. He was great at killing 2 and 3-wound infantry models and even putting some hurt on vehicles. He overheats like crazy tho.
Killa kanz. Same story. They're just around 20% overpriced for what they do instead of 100% like they were in 7-th. But in an actual game where i used a walker wall, they outperformed both deff dreads and a gorkanaught. Gork just got one-shot with a bunch of d6-damage shots but kanz actually did something at range and chopped down a bunch of enemies.
Boyz - underestimated their choppiness and speed but overestimated their durability. Give or take - they're still better than most things in the codex.
Grotsnik - he made his points back 2 out of 2 games so far. Thought he'd be a just another mediocre painboy but the statline increase for just a couple points more is great. He basically has the damage output of a 80 pt warboss while costs less and

Surprisingly good units as Noise Marines, Khorne Berzerkers, Terminators (relative to what they were), Havocs, and Predators. Personal MVP has been Huron for me too.
Necron Destroyers are solid too.

Chaos Rhino with two combi-bolters. Good LOS blockers, put out as much bolter fire as a squad of marines at rapid fire range, and hold up well against small arms fire.
Been using them a lot more than I thought after transporting to rush enemy lines and tie things up. Oh and good for manipulating deployment options for getting the choice for first or second turn.

Easily the hellblasters even though its no surprise. or the repulsor just putting out a dumb amount of shots. also not really surprsingly the power sword on an extra attack intersetor has pulled its weight. Edit: Actually the biggest surprise winner for me is krak grenades never ever forget to throw one if you have them. taking out tanks and flyers is the funniest thing ever.

For me, it's been wraithlords. They're reasonably cheap and can eat up a good bit of fire, even without an invuln save.

For me it's Shining Spears...for the first time since 2nd ed (and they weren't amazing then) they're seriously good. Still fragile as Eldar things are, but for the points/power they're tremendous.

How do you equip your Wraithlords? They're not that cheap really, for what they are, unless you field them totally bare except for the free shuricatapults and a sword... How are you running them?

Same question to you haha, how do you run them? What do you use them for? I have been considering adding some jetbikes to my list, but the windriders seem too fragile and the shining spears more expensive. Considered skyweavers too, even more expensive but pretty killy and harder to kill.

Well, simple answer is that the Eldar suck at the moment. Everything is expensive and fragile...moreso against codex armies. That "should" change a little bit when the codex comes out.
My army still drops in droves regardless of what I take. The only way I use Shining Spears is zipping around behind cover, and pouncing on something unexpected --- 16" move with a 6" lance attack. So hop over terrain and engage. You'll likely die immediately following, but it's possible you'll kill something big or do some damage.
If you survive you can leave close combat (remember your invulnerable save is vs. shooting only). You only get your big lance bonus when charging, but it's worthwhile.
You can also take out most of a larger squad if you roll well. I haven't taken a Warlock or Farseer on bike with them, but that might open up some interesting opportunities to buff them. I only run three at the moment, would like two squads of three or a large squad of five or so.

Correct, they're not surprising MVPs...they're the over-powered crutch which is the only way you can play Eldar and not have your dick kicked off. I have two but I prefer not to use more than one if I can avoid it.

Was anyone expecting Scions to? As what conscripts can do is nothing compared to the damage output of plasma-toting scions.

I really like the Inceptors but they haven't done scheiss for me. Great meteoric descent, but haven't lasted a whole turn. I think the model kicks ass (look wise)but they really should have an extra wound tho.
I love my Hellblasters especially with the Gravis Capt and a Primaris Ancient.
